“Your typing. You’re focused so hard you’ve gotta be getting into the … I don’t know, US treasury or something.”

Charlie rolled his eyes. “I’m coding.”

“Ah, yes. Nice codeword," Violet replied. “I won’t tell. Unless the cops ask, of course.”

Charlie rolled his eyes and looked back at his computer screen. Violet only stayed for half a second longer, and then she went up the stairs and to the guest room. She muddled in her disappointment for a moment, before she decided she could grade papers and not worry about it. Charlie Davis wasn’t worth her time. She needed to remember that.

Chapter Five

Violet

There was scratching at her window.

Violet thought maybe she was imagining it, but when she kept hearing it, she begrudgingly got up.

The winter chill was setting in right in time for Liv and Lewis’s wedding. The upper floors of Charlie’s house were freezing, and the simple quilt on his bed barely did enough to keep Violet warm. She hated getting out of bed in the morning.

But the scratching was also annoying, so she glanced over to see what it was.

She came face to face with a white cat. It stared at her for a long moment before it darted, jumping off the window onto the floor below.

Violet loved animals. She couldn’t get any because of her apartment, but she always dreamed of having a cat. So, seeing one jump from the second story window made her yelp.

She darted to the window, and was glad to see the cat was fine, but was now on the long part of the roof of the first floor. Charlie’s extra office would have a better view of the cat, so she left her room in a rush.

“What’s going on?” Charlie demanded from downstairs.

Violet cursed. She hadn’t meant for him to hear. She had no clue if she woke him up, but if she had, she was going to be in a world of trouble.

“There’s a cat," Violet simply said.

“In the house?” Charlie asked, coming up the stairs.

“No! On the roof!”

“The roof?” Charlie said, looking out the window.

“It was outside of the guest room.”

“How did it get there?”

“No clue," Violet said. “Does the window open?”

“Yes, but…” Charlie paused as she pulled up on the window, letting the cool air in. She hiked a leg out of the window and was about to duck to get outside. “What the hell are you doing, Moore?” Charlie added, his voice urgent, almost like he was worried about her.

“I’m getting the cat. We can’t leave it out there.”

“You can’t go on my roof!”

“Do you want to go do it?” Violet asked.

“No, it’s dangerous to-“

Violet rolled her eyes and ducked out of the window. The roof was barely sloped, and her feet didn’t slip at all.

“I need cat food or something. Do you have any?” She called back.

Charlie looked at her like she was crazy, and to be fair, she kind of was. Most people wouldn’t climb on the roof of someone else’s house, but she had never feared heights, and she wanted to get the cat.
