“Chicken?” Violet asked.

“Wha - Moore, are you crazy?”

“I think you know the answer,” Violet replied. “Either get me something to give the cat to eat or not. I’ll be off your roof faster if you do, though.”

Charlie groaned but turned and left. Violet rubbed her arms and looked for the cat. It was a frigid morning, and the poor cat had to be cold. It was a tiny thing anyways. It peeked around the corner at her with curious eyes.

“Hey, kitty," Violet said, holding her hand out. “I’m not gonna hurt you.” The cat didn’t run away, but also didn’t move towards her. “Come on, there’s a nice warm house right here.”

She hoped Charlie would get back soon because the last thing she wanted was for the cat to try jumping onto the ground. She heard Charlie returning, and the sound of a can opening. The cat darted past her and into the window. She turned to find Charlie glaring at her.

“What?” Violet asked.

“You could have gotten food. You didn’t need to go on my roof.”

Ah. yeah. He was probably right, but it was before coffee, so she obviously wasn’t in her right state of mind. Her face was warm as she made her way back to the window and ducked inside.

“Well, that turned out well," she said, eyeing the cat on the other side of the room, happily eating.

“You got on my roof.”

“I know, but there was a cat.”

“That was dangerous!” He snapped.

“What? I wasn’t near the edge. I’ve been on a roof before.”

“What?” Charlie asked.

“I used to sneak to the roof of my apartment all the time. I loved it there.”

“You could have gotten hurt.”

“Careful, Davis. I might begin to think you actually care.”

Charlie glared at her, his gaze feeling it could pierce her skin. Yikes. Maybe she shouldn’t have said that.

“Food would have worked," he said through gritted teeth.

“Well, I know now," Violet said.

“Were you raised in a barn?” Charlie said. “For one thing, this isn’t your house. You can’t climb on my roof and possibly damage something because you saw a cat.”

Violet knew he was right, and her face burned in shame.

“I just…”

But Charlie wasn’t done. “And what would have happened if you fell? I’d be on the line. Jesus Christ, didn’t your parents teach you anything about etiquette?”

“Did yours?” Violet snapped back. “Yeah, I fucked up, but it’s early in the morning and I panicked, okay? I’m sorry I was on your roof, but nothing is damaged and I’m fine.”

Charlie glared at her. “You can’t go onto roofs and do dangerous shit, Moore.”

“It wasn’t that bad. Are you telling me you’ve never been on your own roof?”

“No. If I need anything, I’d hire someone.”

“Well, I don’t have the money for that.”
