Violet fell in love hard and fast. And then it would blow up when the two of them wound up on different pages. She had been through some longer relationships, but her dating history was mostly short and sour.

Only a few of the men she dated ever met her friends, and her friends hadn’t liked any of them. Liv and Lewis had tried to set her up, but that had also ended in disaster. Elijah had been the last one she dared to try it with, and him leaving after sleeping with her was the last straw.

These days, Violet had given up. She hadn’t been on a date since she was with Elijah.

Seeing Lewis and Liv together was sometimes like a punch to the gut. They were so perfect together it hurt. Liv was always happy with Lewis, and their lives melted together perfectly. They shared everything.

Violet wanted that too.

After the cake tasting, she decided to go back to Charlie’s place. She hoped he would be out with Lauren or something, so she could go up to his guest room and be alone for the night. Maybe she’d try dating apps again. Or maybe she’d fall asleep lonely.

Of course, when she got there, Charlie was home, and the lights were on. Violet planned on making a break for the guest room. Maybe he was in a good enough mood to simply leave her alone.

When she walked in, Charlie was at his dining room table. He had thick rimmed black glasses on, and he was squinting at his computer. He wore sweatpants and a band T-shirt, looking more casual than Violet ever thought he could be.

Violet stared all for two seconds before he noticed her.

“You’re back late," he said, his eyes not leaving his computer.

Yikes. Looked like he wanted to talk. She could only hope this wouldn’t end in disaster.

“I went to a cake tasting with Liv and Lewis after work.”

“Oh," Charlie said. He finally looked away from his computer. “Did they choose something?”

Violet was surprised he wasn’t jealous. “They did. They got the plain white.”

“Seems about right," Charlie said, and he went back to typing.

“Why?”

“White is the usual wedding cake flavor.”

“I’d want something weird.” Violet didn’t know why she said it. “Like strawberry.”

“For a wedding cake?”

Violet shrugged. “It’s my wedding.”

There was a long pause, then Charlie leaned back in his chair and looked at her with a sardonic smile on his face.

“Why do I get the vibe you would do everything backwards at a wedding?”

“Because I would. Traditions are boring.”

Violet waited for the other shoe to drop. He could easily turn this into a thinly veiled insult where he called her too strange for marriage. Or maybe he could go after how long she had been single. That would have been right up his alley.

“Strawberry is an under rated cake flavor," Charlie said instead.

Thank God he hadn’t gone for an insult. She didn’t think she could take it.

“The vendor they chose made an amazing strawberry. It was easily the best one there.”

He only nodded, leaving them in a dull silence. Violet felt a little disappointed, but she didn’t know why. She hated this guy - why would she care if he didn’t want to talk to her? She certainly shouldn’t want to talk to him.

“Anyways,” Violet said. “I’ll let you get back to your hacking.”

“Hacking?”
