Charlie paused. He was happier these days. Violet was like a missing piece, slotting back into place within him. He had never felt so alive, so complete.

“Yeah, well. I am happier.”

“Must be some girl.”

Charlie laughed, “She is.”

“I don’t have a daughter by the way. I’m nosy, but I’m glad to see you look a little less sad when you talk about your girlfriend.”

“It’s certainly feels better,” Charlie replied. “Your computer is done, by the way.”

“Thanks, Charlie. This is why you make the big bucks, huh?”

“Nice talking to you Paula,” Charlie said. He smiled at her before leaving her office, more ready than ever to get home.

He hadn’t stopped to think about how so much had changed. He knew it had but comparing this to how things had been six months ago was mind boggling. He was so much happier. He was less lonely, and he felt like he truly had a life.

He used to pull into a cold and empty driveway. The lights were always off because no one was home. Now, they were on, and he could see Violet inside working on something. He could see the outlines of the new furniture they had gotten. The house was lived in.

“Hey,” Violet said when Charlie walked into the house. “I was thinking-“

He cut her off with a kiss. Usually, he would wait for her to be done talking, but this time, it was urgent.

“What was that for?” Violet asked, sounding a little dazed.

“Everything you’ve done,” Charlie said. “Forgiving me and giving me your patience. For loving my house and my life. I can’t thank you enough.”

“You don’t have to thank me.”

“I’m doing it anyways. You made my life better, Violet.”

She blushed, and he kissed her again, savoring how she felt against him. When he finally pulled away, her eyes were half lidded.

“What were you saying?” He asked.

“Hang on, you can’t come in here and kiss me like that and expect me to remember what I as saying.”

“Yeah, maybe not,”

“But because I am amazing, I do remember. It was about the party tomorrow…”

Charlie laughed and listened, eager to help with what he could.

The next day, they got the last-minute things done for the party, and people started showing up around noon.

Charlie had never thought he would have so many people in his house.

He had never hated his home - it was the opposite. He loved it so much, and when Lauren talked it down, something in him broke, making him feel like it was something to be protected.

Now he wanted to show it off.

The garden was finished. Violet was in one of her pink and green floral dresses, and she had cooked a ton of food for the event. She looked right at home, and Charlie wanted her to feel that way.

This was one of the first times his friends were going to see them both in their own home. Lewis still looked at them sometimes as if one of them was a landmine waiting to blow up, but Liv had been dying to hang out with them both.

Micah was coming too, as well as his mother and her new girlfriend. Charlie tried not to be nervous, but Violet had done her best to assure him it would be okay. So, when people started arriving, he tried to stay calm and in a good mood.

“It looks good in here," Lewis said to him as he walked in with Liv. “It’s like a totally different place.”
