“I think so. Besides, I want people to see it. And I want people to see you.”

“Okay," Violet said, feeling a blush rise to her cheeks. “Then let’s have a party.”

Charlie

It was a Friday afternoon, and the office was done for the week. Charlie was ready to get home and back to Violet, who had already started preparing for the house party the next day. He was feeling nervous about it, but also a little excited. He hadn’t had more than three people over since he had moved into the house.

People were filtering out of the office, and he was ready to go with them. He had gotten all he needed done for the day, and he was more than ready to start his weekend.

“I’ve never seen you so eager to leave,” a voice said.

“Paula,” Charlie replied. “You’re here late.”

“Oh, the big wigs have us working on some project, but my computer’s running slow. Can you help?”

Charlie sighed but figured he may as well look. The entire IT department was probably out for the weekend anyways.

“Sure,” he replied. “But if it’s not an easy fix, I might not be able to stay long.”

“Got a hot date?”

“Kind of. More like a relaxing night before a busy weekend.”

“Hm, with that girl of yours?”

“A different one, but yes, a girl.”

“A new one? Wow, I never thought I’d see the day.”

“What does that mean?” Charlie asked, walking to Paula’s office.

“Oh, just that usually when someone’s not moving forward in a relationship, there’s a reason.”

“Plenty of people don’t get married.”

“Yeah, but they usually look a little less sad when they talk about their partners.”

Charlie logged onto Paula’s computer. “Yeah, maybe you’re right.”

“Well, what about this new girl?”

“Why so interested?” Charlie asked.

“Maybe I have a daughter I could set you up with. Or maybe I’m curious. Entertain an old woman.”

Charlie shook his head, trying not to laugh. “She’s a schoolteacher at a local school. She just got offered a job as the head of a summer program for kids, so we’re having a party to celebrate.”

“At your place?”

“Yeah.”

“Huh, never thought I’d see the day.”

“For what?” He said as he rebooted Paula’s computer.

“That you looked happy.”
