“Ms. Moore, you go above and beyond for your students, and the board recently received funding for a summer institution for those who a place to go while their parents’ work. We were looking for someone caring and interested in students who may be having home troubles. You are the perfect fit.”

Violet blinked, trying to take in the words. “Me?”

“Of course.” Dr. Jones said, a knowing smile on his face. “I am sorry it took me so long to get all this together, but I think you will love it. The camp would be set up here, and you’d oversee hiring the staff to work underneath you. Here is the offer letter.”

Violet took it numbly. She saw she’d be getting extra pay for the three months, and it was a decent amount too. Probably enough to buy a new car. Or get the roof fixed at the house.

She read over the job description in shock. It was perfect, exactly what she wanted to do.

“I … I can’t believe this. This is amazing," she said earnestly. “Thank you for recommending me for this.”

This was incredibly rare. Not only had she not applied for it, but she didn’t even interview. She got lucky.

“No, Ms. Moore. Thank you for being an amazing teacher,” Dr. Jones said. “It may take some time, but good work always gets rewarded when I can help it.”

Violet nodded at him, unable to talk without crying. She gave her boss a big, probably unprofessional hug, and then went back home. She drove in total silence, still trying to process what all she had received.

She opened the door and shut it. Charlie came around the corner with his stupidly cute glasses on.

“You’re back fast.”

Violet could only nod.

“Oh no,” Charlie said, frowning. “Was it bad news?”

Violet shook her head.

“Good?”

She silently handed him the offer letter.

“What? A summer camp program? You’re leading it?”

“Dr. Jones offered it to me because of praise from Jason and his mother.”

“Violet! This is great!” Charlie scooped her into a tight, almost crushing hug.

“I didn’t even interview,” Violet said after a moment. “This is so rare in teaching”

“But deserved. The raise is huge, Violet.”

“I can’t believe it!” She said as the shock began to wear off. “With this we can fix the roof, or even finally upgrade the AC before summer gets here. This is great!”

“You want to spend the money on the house?” Charlie asked, looking perplexed.

“Of course,” Violet said. “You said the house needs repairs, and I don’t mind. I live here too.”

“Right…” Charlie said. “We’ll work it out near summer. For now, we need to celebrate.”

Violet had a feeling he was going to try to say the house could wait - that she should spend the money on herself, but she would gladly help him out. After all, she got to live here for basically nothing.

“We should definitely celebrate,” Violet said, instead of bringing it up yet. That would be an argument for later. “What are you thinking? Maybe dinner somewhere?”

“How about a house party?”

“Are you sure?”

Charlie looked around the house. In the two months since Violet began dating him, she had slowly began hanging photos and getting decorations that made it feel more and more like a home. These days it wasn’t the empty shell of history. It was ready for new memories.
