He still wasn’t happy with her.

“Charlie," she said, when she saw him. “Hey, I’m sorry for assuming things the other day. I was wrong to do that.”

Charlie was surprised at the apology. “Oh, uh… thanks for saying that. It was … a little weird having you come and yell at me.”

“I shouldn’t have, and I know that. I worry about Violet a lot.”

Lewis cleared his throat, as if trying to cut off the Violet talk. This was his usual deal. He tried to avoid mentioning Violet at any cost around Charlie.

“She’s not good at asking for help," Charlie said instead. “I know. It’s easy to worry about someone like that.”

“Wow. This is weird," Liv said. “I’m sorry. I’m so used to you cringing whenever I mention her.”

“It’s fine. We’re all good now.”

“For now,” Lewis said under his breath. Charlie glanced at him. If this was how their conversation was going to go, then it didn’t bode well for Charlie’s patience.

“Anyways, I’ve gotta go. I’m meeting a friend for a movie.”

“I know," Charlie said. “Violet left right when I did, so she’s probably already there.”

“Oh, you know I’m hanging out with Violet. That’s weird.”

Charlie nodded, not sure what else to say. Liv waved and walked out of the door, leaving Lewis and Charlie alone.

“I’m not even gonna ask what happened," Lewis said. “All I know is I’ll believe it when I see you two not kill each other at a group function. Liv mentioned us all hanging out, so I’m reserving my judgement for then.”

“Okay,” Charlie replied. “But let’s not worry about that, it’s game night.”

Charlie hated his friends were so uncomfortable around them. He hated that it was their own fault for not talking sooner. But he was going to have to live with it. He and Violet had moved on, but maybe others would take longer.

They played a few video games, but Charlie’s heart wasn’t in it. Everything felt awkward, as if Lewis was waiting for him to explode about Violet living with him.

They were walking on eggshells, and he hated it.

“So, uh… Liv wanted me to ask you how it is living with Violet," Lewis asked eventually. Every word sounded forced. “Like… from your perspective.”

“It’s fine," Charlie said, shrugging.

“Come on. You can tell me. I know you have issues with it. You never let people in your space.”

Charlie shook his head. “There isn’t anything to tell.”

“But you aren’t talking about it all.”

“Did you not see how awkward it was with Liv? We’re mentioning it, but it’s hard.”

“It’s me. I won’t judge.”

Charlie heaved out a sigh. But he knew he didn’t have much of a choice. “There isn’t much to say. She came in, it was weird, and we worked it out. If you want proof, Violet offered for us all to hang out tomorrow night at a sushi bar.”

“What? You hate sushi bars.”

“Lauren hated sushi bars. I’m … hesitant, but apparently this one has a conveyor belt and is pretty good.”

“What does Lauren think about this anyways? I’m assuming you told her after the rehearsal dinner.”

Charlie froze. He had forgotten Lewis didn’t know.
