“Lauren and I are done,” he said slowly. Hearing her name didn’t feel like a stab in the back anymore, but he didn’t like to think about the person he was with her.

“Okay, so you definitely had a huge blowout with her about the rehearsal. Look, man, I’m sorry you’re not with Lauren right now, but this usually is a phase that lasts a few weeks and then it’s back to normal.”

“Lewis, I’m not getting back together with her.”

Lewis raised his eyebrows. “That’s a first. You’re the one that’s mad this time?”

“I’m not mad. I’m done. She acted like a child at the rehearsal. She … egged things on with Violet and me. It’s not worth it. She’s blocked on everything, and I have no interest in undoing any of that.”

“You’re done this time?”

“Yes.” Charlie paused the game and turned to his friend. “It’s over.”

“Okay.” Lewis nodded, but Charlie wasn’t sure his friend believed him. After all, Charlie had said they were done before. “So, you and Violet are getting along, and Lauren is out of the picture for now. Is there anything else I missed?”

“I got a cat.”

“What?” Lewis said. “Why is that the most shocking thing I’ve heard?”

“Is it really? My mom had animals all the time growing up.”

“Yeah, because you said you hated animals in college because Lauren did.”

“Lauren doesn’t matter. It’s what I wanted, and Violet found the cat on my roof, decided to climb on the roof to get her, and then I kept the cat. That’s all that happened.”

“Hang on, Violet climbed on your roof?”

“Yeah, she’s not scared of heights and it’s weird she’s not.”

“You let her?”

“Have you ever told Violet to not do something?”

“Not me, but Liv has.”

“And how did that go?”

“I’ve heard she’s stubborn.”

Charlie only nodded.

“But you hated how stubborn she was. You always complained about it.”

Charlie thought about it, but then shook his head. “It’s not a huge deal.”

Lewis blinked. “I’m still thinking this is a prank.”

“I know it’s hard to believe, which is why we’re both offering to show you guys at dinner tomorrow.”

Lewis thought about it. “You two could easily get us kicked out.”

Charlie tried not to get annoyed. “We won’t.”

“But I am curious… fine. Let’s try it. I’ll have apologies ready if it does downhill.”

Charlie nodded, hoping this would be enough to show his friends they were better - that they got along.

“By the way,” Lewis asked. “Do you have photos of the cat?”
