Violet sighed. After weeks of it being the two of them, reality hit hard. And reality meant facing that she and Charlie hadn’t made good names for themselves.

“I’m sorry we both gave you that impression,” Violet said. “We’re trying to do better.”

Liv looked at her like she was an alien, but Violet met her gaze firmly.

“This is so weird. If I knew sticking you two in a house together would have fixed this, I would have done it years ago. So, this friends thing is real, then? You don’t hate each other?”

Violet opened her mouth to say yes, but something stopped her for a moment. She didn’t have a doubt in her mind they were friends because they had said they were, and yet it didn’t seem to fit. Her mind flashed back to the other night, when he held her as he cried, when he took her out on Saturday when she was sad.

Did friends do those things? Maybe.

But boyfriends did too.

“Okay, maybe friends is the wrong word,” Liv said, frowning.

“N-No, it’s close. I’d say we’re friends.”

“Right… so you’re barely admitting to being friends with him, and yet somehow you decided to stay with him permanently?

“Oh, it wasn’t much of a decision, really. He offered.”

“Really? Lewis always says he hates having people over.”

“Oh, he does. But that’s because his home belonged to his great grandmother and Lauren was such a bitch about it. Once he figured out I wasn’t going to shit on his house, he was fine with it.”

“Huh, so you’re fine with having a roommate now?”

“As much as I can be.”

“Wow," Liv said.

“You don’t believe me.”

“I do! I mean… I’m trying to. It’s kind of hard to get the past out of my head. It feels like yesterday you were telling me how you wanted to kill him.”

Violet shrugged. “We’re working on it. That’s all we can do.”

“I still can’t believe this,” she said, shaking her head.

“Tomorrow is game night, right? Lewis and Charlie always hang out on Tuesdays. What if we all hung out?”

“Actually, I was hoping we could go see a movie tomorrow. I think I need some girl time after being gone for three weeks. Plus, I know Lewis is dying to talk to Charlie.”

“Okay, then maybe after that? There’s a fun sushi place I want to try.”

“You know what? What the hell? I feel like risking a fight for sushi. Let’s try it.”

Violet winced at the mention of a fight between her and Charlie, but she had gotten Liv to agree. That was a good step.

Charlie

“Game night!” Lewis said as Charlie opened the door.

Charlie was glad his friend was back in town, but after the awkward confrontation with Liv, he dreaded game night. But Lewis had asked if he was still up for it, and he didn’t want to miss out on the times he usually looked forward to.

Liv was in the background, about to leave. Charlie already knew she and Violet were hanging out again to see a movie, but he was hoping she’d be gone by the time he got there.
