“You two can’t even have a conversation.”

“We’re conversing right now,” Violet said.

“Guys, you don’t have to do this to prove a point or anything," Lewis said. “You know that, right? The wedding is over, and now we’re back to our usual schedule. You don’t have to spend time together and we can all hang out separately.”

“Yeah, Violet," Liv said. “You can drop the act. I know this has all been hard, but you can come back with us. You have nothing to prove.”

Violet’s anger faded, but Charlie’s didn’t. He was so close to losing it.

“I’m fine," Violet said, frowning.

“You don’t seem fine," Liv said, frowning.

Charlie wondered if Violet was going to mention her day. She had been fine when she left this morning, so it had to have been work that upset her. But then Violet’s words from this morning bounced in his head.

Violet only showed the good sides of herself. And being upset was not one of the good sides.

“I’m fine," Violet said, putting a smile on her face that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Seriously. It’s all good.”

Liv leaned back, a heavy frown on her face. It was obvious she didn’t believe Violet.

Charlie grit his teeth. How long was he going to have to wait until he could actually help Violet with whatever was bugging her? He was tired of explaining everything to Liv when she didn’t ask.

“Can you guys give us some space?” Charlie asked.

“You’re asking me to leave?” Liv said.

“You showed up here unannounced. We can explain everything to you. Separately, if you want. But I’m not having that great of a day and I need some space from this.”

Violet looked at him gratefully.

“Hey,” Lewis said. “Let’s do as he said.”

“What?” Liv said, angrily.

“Liv, this is Charlie’s house. Even if Violet is here, he doesn’t like guests.”

“I’m not a guest," Liv said.

“We came over here unannounced.”

“I’m not leaving without Violet.”

“Liv, I’m fine!” Violet snapped. Liv turned to her. “I had a bad day and all I want to do is go sit in a bathtub with a gallon of wine and not look at anyone for twelve hours, okay? I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the apartment, and I’m sorry you had to find out about me staying with Charlie like this, but I am fine with it. I didn’t agree to it because of the wedding or the fake friendship thing we pulled on you guys. I can tell you more later but please, can I be alone?”

For a moment, the entire house was silent. Charlie hoped Liv wasn’t going to push anymore because he could tell Violet was close to blowing up.

“Okay," Liv said, quietly. Lewis grabbed his wife by the arm.

“We’ll talk soon," he said, dragging Liv out of the house.

Lewis waved awkwardly as he pulled Liv out of the door. Charlie watched the door close, his anger leaving now that they were alone. He took a deep breath, expelling his anger so he could be there for Violet. Once it was gone, he turned to her, ready to listen - only to find she had sunk to the floor, head in her hands.

Violet

Violet could swear she was cursed.
