“I don’t like it.”

“Are we doing this?” Violet asked. “Because you said I couldn’t be friends with you, and I know I can. Can you be friends with me?”

“I’m friends with everyone.”

“Even me?”

Charlie’s smugness turned into something that almost looked pained. “Of … course.”

“Here’s the deal," Violet said, her voice serious. “We’re not going to like this. But we do this until the wedding, got it?”

“So, we’re friends for the wedding?”

“As soon as the reception is over, we can meet in an alleyway and let it all out. Sound good?” Violet said, holding out her hand.

“Can I make a list of all the things you’re inevitably going to do in the next few weeks that piss me off?”

“Only if I can too. We can even hurl insults at each other like in-laws at Thanksgiving. The point is - we bury this feud in the darkest depths of the ocean until the wedding. Got it?”

“Fine.” Charlie didn’t look happy about it. Violet wanted to laugh at his pained, annoyed expression, but she would save that for the moment the wedding was over.

Violet nodded, forcing herself to smile.

“I preferred it when you glared at me," Charlie said uneasily.

Oh. Maybe there was an upside to this. Seeing Charlie squirm was fun.

“Come on, friend," Violet said, smiling wider. “We’ve got this.”

“God, this is terrible," Charlie said, but his hand met hers. It was warm and solid, and it made all this real. “But I’ll do it. Only so I can rub it in your face that I can do it.”

“I’m the only one smiling right now," Violet told him.

“That’s not a smile.”

“What are you talking about? This is definitely a smile.”

“It’s unnatural.”

“I’m just being sweet.”

“Stop!”

Violet laughed and Charlie only stared at her, displeasure on his face.

“You need a better poker face if this is going to work," Violet said. “I’ve got years of practice with my students.”

“Go inside, Moore.”

As always, Charlie’s use of her last name made her want to stomp on his dreams and make him cry, but she buried the feeling in the darkest pits of hell and turned to walk inside.

“Wait, are you actually going inside? Are you listening to me?”

“Only to give our friends the good news, Davis.”

Charlie glared when she threw his last name back, but she smiled. It was so easy to piss him off. If anyone was going to break, it wasn’t going to be her.

“Oh good, you’re still alive," Liv said from the dining room table. “I win ten bucks.”
