“You only win it if the cops weren’t called," Lewis said. “They weren’t, right?”

“Davis is still standing," Violet told them. “He’s coming in soon. He needed some air.”

“You seem … weird," Liv said. “What happened?”

“Oh, nothing," Violet said. “Nothing bad anyways. Charlie and I had a good conversation and-“

“We decided to be friends.”

Violet turned to glare. He had not only interrupted her but stole her thunder too.

He was such a dick.

And he knew he was pissing her off. He was all smiles now that she was glaring at him. The worst part about it was that he had a decent smile. It was like the Anti-Christ came down with the face of Chris Pine.

“What?” Both Liv and Lewis asked.

“Right," Violet said, turning back to them. All she had to do was think of Charlie as one of her students, and she’d be fine. She’d never wanted to run over one of her students with a monster truck of bombs, so she could stop herself with Charlie too. “Friends.”

“Yep. We’re letting bygones be bygones and trying friendship for your wedding.”

There was a long moment of silence. And then Liv started laughing.

“No," she said between cackles. “There’s no way!”

“Guys, you don’t have to do this," Lewis added.

Violet knew her friends wouldn’t believe her, but Liv’s laughter combined with Lewis’s immediate disposal felt like a challenge. She glanced at Charlie, and saw he had the same expression she felt.

After all, they did have one thing in common.

They didn’t like to lose.

“It is!” Violet said. “We’re trying to move forward. It’ll be good for everyone!”

“No more thinking about the past,” Charlie added. “It’s all about the future. And in the future, we may be best friends.”

Ugh. Too far. Now they sounded like they were trying to sell a shitty used car.

“This is …” Lewis began.

“Perfect!” Liv said. Violet blinked, knowing there was no way Liv was convinced that quickly. She was playing along.

Lewis wasn’t.

“Don’t you see, Lewis? Now we get the best of both worlds. They can dance together at the wedding. We were trying to find a good partner for Violet anyways.”

Oh God. Anything but that.

Violet was in the wedding party, and so was Charlie. For months now, Violet had assumed she would be dancing with Damon, which was the best out of the three groomsmen Lewis had. The other groomsman, Elijah, was a guy Violet had dated briefly, and it had ended with many tears. She and Damon had barely ever talked, but even so, he was the best option.

Of course, if she and Charlie could do it, Liv was going to let Violet stand next to her at the altar. Liv’s sister was too busy to be maid of honor, and Violet had gotten that spot, only for it to be ruined because she wouldn’t be able to dance with Charlie, who was Lewis’s best man.

“Of … course we can," Charlie said. His voice sound strangled, but at least he was still smiling. His arm came to rest around Violet’s shoulder, and she had to fight every cell in her body to stay still. She wanted to run. “That’s what friends do!”

“Oh yeah… they do… dance together," Violet added.

“Oh my god," Lewis muttered, rubbing his palm over his face.
