Charlie had to try.

“Yeah, fine.”

“Let’s step on the balcony," Violet said. Without a word, Violet turned and went outside, her dress flowing with her.

“Is this a good idea?” Lewis asked.

“I did say take it outside," Liv answered.

Without another word, Charlie followed Violet - unsure of what was about to happen. She wouldn’t go as far as to push him off the balcony, right?

Violet

“I heard Lewis ask you not to fight with me," Violet said, ignoring her racing heart. It had been killing her to sit at the table and work without saying anything to him. But she did it. And now she wanted to be sure Charlie was going to do the same.

“How?” Charlie asked. “We were across the room.”

Violet crossed her arms. “You have two brain cells and they’re both fighting for third place, Davis. I teach middle schoolers. I have good ears.”

“And they still don’t pay you more than fifty thousand a year?”

That hurt, and Violet had no doubt he had meant for it to. The reason she was in a teaching job instead of going in grad school was his fault anyways. Of course he’d rub it in.

Violet wanted to make a biting, mean remark. Technically, she could - considering they were outside.

“What did you say to Lewis?” She said instead.

Charlie paused. That was obviously not the reaction he was expecting from her, and she didn’t even blame him. Usually she would have blown up, but she was focused.

“I said I’d do it if you did," he replied.

Violet paused. She could do this. She had to. This was her best friend’s wedding.

“Of course I can. I can get along with anyone.”

Charlie shook his head, his forehead creased in a way that should have been unattractive.

“We have six years of experience telling us you can’t," Charlie reminded her.

“I can. I’m an English teacher, remember? I get along with people I hate all the time.”

“Please. You couldn’t be friends with me if someone paid you.”

Violet glared at him, letting the challenge wash over her. He was the one who had started all of this six years ago. Was he expecting her to let it go, without so much as an apology? He had gone from being kind to cruel in an afternoon - not her.

But this was Liv. And Charlie was challenging her. She had put a lot of pain in a lot of boxes before. She could do it again.

“I can be friends with you," Violet said. She forced her voice to go to its normal tone, almost as if she were talking to a sixth grader who had thrown gum at her.

Charlie stared at her like she was insane.

It was almost enough to make Violet break, but she didn’t.

“That’s … weird," he said.

“I’m pretending you’re one of my students," Violet said.
