It was terribly distracting.
He couldn’t stop thinking about her. How was her day going? Was Jason acting out? Did she have any issues with other kids while she was teaching?
Would she be upset if he asked her?
His hand itched for his phone, but he managed not to make a fool of himself by reaching out.
He got off a little early but knew Violet would be talking to Jason’s mother until later. He prepared himself for a night alone coding until she got back, and then he’d ask about her day, hoping she’d talk to him.
Charlie knew he was beginning to get desperate.
However, his phone rang a few hours after he got home, and he answered it immediately, thinking it was Violet.
It was not.
“Liv is pissed at you.”
“Micah? Why are you calling me?”
“Because Liv is pissed at you," she said, as if it should be obvious.
“Why is she mad at me?”
“Because Violet is missing.”
Charlie’s heart stopped for a moment. “What?”
“Yeah. Her apartment is being torn down as we speak, and she’s not answering her phone. Liv came by to ask if Violet came to stay with me after the wedding, but I haven’t heard from her, so she’s heading to your place.”
Charlie was silent for a moment, trying to take in the words. Obviously, Violet wouldn’t answer her phone if she was in a meeting, but Charlie knew where she was.
“Wait, what do I have to do with this?”
“Liv thinks you and Violet got into a massive blowout fight after the wedding and you killed her or something.”
“What?”
“She was staying with you.” Micah said, “And obviously we all knew it wasn’t going to work out for long. You didn’t mention her yesterday. Her apartment is gone. It’s kind of a logical conclusion.”
“What?” Charlie said. “No one even asked!”
“It’s a rule not to mention Violet to you.”
Charlie felt his chest tighten in frustration. “Then don’t get mad when I don’t mention her!”
“Woah, save that for Liv,” Micah said, her voice calm as always. “Actually, maybe don’t if you want to stay alive.”
“So, she’s heading here? What if I had plans?”
“Then, they’re going to wait. Liv isn’t going to be held back.”
“Where’s Lewis?”
“He’s worried about Violet too.”
“And neither of them called me?”
“They were afraid you’d hang up.”
