“It was like a light switch once we had talked it out.”

Charlie smiled. “I’m glad you feel the same way.”

“I wonder how they’re going to react to us getting along,” Violet mused. She hadn’t given it much thought. She was more concerned with surviving each day.

“I bet they won’t believe us,” Charlie replied. “But they’ll come around eventually.”

“I still feel terrible that we argued for so long. I know it was hard on them.”

“Yeah,” Charlie said quietly. “We were idiots.”

“Not idiots. More like emotionally constipated adults being played by an insecure lawyer with nothing better to do.”

“That too,” Charlie said. “But we were the ones that continued it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t mention you yesterday out of habit.”

“Maybe that’s exactly it,” Violet replied. The thought made her feel better. “Honestly, I was so worried I had done something to Liv, but I bet she avoided it with you because in the past we hated each other.”

“Maybe,” Charlie said. “Does that make you feel better?”

“A little. I figure she’ll call me once she realizes I didn’t stay at her place.”

“They’re going to lose it once they figure out you’re still here.”

“Hopefully they’ll be happy. This would be like old times again. Everything will be easier once they figure out we can be in the same room again.”

“That’ll be a fun conversation.”

“I’ll take Liv and you take Lewis.”

“Maybe we should draft up something. A thesis sounds good…”

Violet laughed. “You’re bringing up thesis jokes this soon after our six-year fight over my paper?”

“It got you to laugh. You’re not that offended.”

“I could curse you. I’ve been making friends with the spirit of your great grandmother in the basement. One of these days, I’ll know all of her secrets.”

“Good luck with that. Gigi Ruth didn’t speak much English.”

“I can learn French.”

“Gigi Ruth was German.”

“But … the term “Gigi’ is usually from France, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” Charlie said. “She liked to be a woman of many mysteries. She’d be happy to know they continued in her afterlife.”

Charlie

Charlie went to work and tried to function as usual, but his brain wouldn’t stop rounding back to Violet. He wanted to figure out why Liv was acting weird. He wanted to solve all her problems, but he also knew she would want to do that herself.

He loved seeing all sides of her. The fact she was so natural with him meant more than he could ever let her know. He felt special, knowing she was being herself rather than anyone else.

Charlie could see it all now. Violet was nothing but perfect around friends but had never been that way with him. He could see how it wore on her.

He was seeing a side of her no one else could see.
