I didn’t have time to stay with Sky until Leonora arrived. Sky was breathing. I was sure she was fine. I raced in Ralph’s Porsche to get home before Maddie left Royal Road.
Chapter 18
Kingpin
Reaching the gate, I asked Cricket if Maddie Mae had arrived.
He didn’t need to check the list. Brother remembered everything. “Nope,” he said.
After I parked the car sideways, I texted Maddie. “Where R U?”
“I’m so sorry. I’ve gotten tied up at work.”
“How? U A SUB?”
“Oh, yes. But I’m at the middle school today, so I also tutor after school. Parents haven’t shown up. We’ve called. I’ve called an actual teacher to come and wait, but I’ve got to go home afterwards and change by then it’ll be really late. I’m sorry, Kingpin. Tonight just doesn’t work.”
“K,” I typed. “Tomorrow?”
“That’d be great. I’m really looking forward to it. Would 7 be too early for you? I really want to see you, and we can plan our evening then.”
“6 is even better.”
“Oh, okay. That works even better for me, too.”
Upset I wouldn’t be seeing Maddie tonight after all, I went to the bar and asked Opry for Leo’s number. I called to check on Sky.
“I can’t believe you justBack to the Futuredher here.”
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
“Just like Marty McFly in that movie. You just left your girl passed out on some porch swing. Dropped her off like the UPS man. Anyone could’ve taken advantage of her.”
“Sky’s not my girl. Is she okay?”
“Yes. She came to and she’s sleeping. And if she’s not your girl, why did you cut her?”
“What would you know about it?”
“I’ve not been around the club long, but I’ve heard that if the Prez wants a girl to himself, he carves a K on her to let his brothers know. It’s no property patch, but they say it’s as good as it gets with you.”
This girl knew too much. I’d have Opry take care of it.
“What should I tell her mom?” She asked next.
“Nothing. Nothing about me.”
Fuck. Now I had someone else who could blackmail me. This was getting out of hand. Seeing Memphis and Junebug cut up with my brothers at the game tables, I longed for something easy. I went to them.
“Let’s go to bed,” I said to them, putting my arm around both of them.
The girls followed me to the big house.
The next morning, I woke up to a scene. Maddie stood over me, her eyes shooting daggers. She shouted, but I had no idea what she was on about. Sitting up, I noticed two sleeping beauties, Memphis and Junebug naked beside me as always.
It took me a moment. Holy shit. I scrubbed my eyes. “What time is it?”
Maddie screamed and carried on so much, she woke my whores.
