“Alone? I’m never alone.” Stupid fucker. We were all alone in this room. I drew my weapon.

He put his hands up. “I forgot about your gun.” Ralph’s eyes went to his desk. Must be where he kept his. Stupid. I stepped between him and the desk.

“Guns,” I corrected him. Thinking of the knives I had strapped on, I corrected myself, “Weapons. Ralph, this is ludicrous. I’m going to take the girl, and you’ll get your money. Like always. You really want to fuck with us? No one fucks with the Royal Bastards.”

“Word is your broke or about to be on account of your arena being a pile of ash. Kick all the ass you want, no one will do business with a broke loser.”

“Do you speak for all your family?”

Ralph wavered, “Now, no one said anything about that.”

“Well, here’s something my father taught me. If someone stops fearing you, remind them why they were scared in the first place.” Pointing at his boot, I cocked my gun.

“Now, I know people say you’re mad. That you’d shoot someone for the slightest offense, but I’ve not seen it. You seem like a very reasonable man to me. That’s why I like doing business with you.”

“Is that right?”

“Yeah, take the girl. Good riddance to old rubbish, I always say. Take her for free.” The man was really shaking in his boots.

“Thank you, Ralph. I will.”

He relaxed. “Sorry, Kingpin. I made a mistake. I see that now.”

I’d be damned if he ever made that mistake again. I pulled the trigger, shooting him in the foot. Even with a silencer on the noise was unmistakable. Ralph’s screams were blood curdling. Sky came through the door. She’d gotten dressed in her jeans and tee. One look at Ralph and she fainted. Fucking , fuck.

Ralph had been the one shot and was still coherent.

“Where’s your car keys?” I asked him.

He pointed to the wall. “Hold this.” I handed him the gun. It wasn’t actually my gun, just a ghost. “Thanks, Ralph.” I grabbed his keys, leaving him holding the gun. Picking up Sky off the floor, I left while he complained. Fucker thought I’d be driving him to the hospital. As I carried Sky out back, a stripper stopped and asked if she was okay.

“Ralph shot himself in the foot and the girl passed out.”

Perking up, she said, “Oh, yeah. She does that. How does the girl have a period?”

“Beats me.”

Putting Sky into Ralph’s Porsche 911 Turbo, I immediately felt claustrophobic. In the rearview, I saw his goons coming for me. I floored it. If it must be a cage at least this thing would flat out fly. I opened my phone and pulled up some directions. I took Sky to her friend Leo’s house. Dropping her off on the porch swing, I called Opry.

“Put Sky’s friend on the phone.”

“Who?”

“That nineteen-year-old you’re fucking.”

“Hey, I’m not hitting that yet.”

“Opry, for the love of god. Just tell her to come home. Her friend is on her porch. The girl passed out. And send Thorn out to Shakey’s. Tell him to take a crew. And rescue my hog.”

“What happened?”

“Shot Ralph in the foot. He said you didn’t pay him.”

“I can explain.”

“There’s no time.”

“Aight, Aight.”
