“I’ll probably be going away for a long time.” His hands ran along my back.

“But you didn’t do anything.”

“No. Someone on the force wants a fall guy. But don’t worry. No one is going to believe a teenager’s running the show. That’d be ridiculous.”

“But you said your dad…”

“Shhh...”

Beau didn’t want me to talk about his secret. He was always in trouble, but he claimed it was all on purpose. All part of a larger plan to bring someone big down. He’d get thrown in Juvie for a bit and be back out again like nothing happened. Beau confided in me, that he was feeding information to his dad who was a cop. Even when he was out, I knew he was mixed up with the wrong crowd. But he promised that it’d all lead to a great career for him one day. He wanted to be more than his father. He swore that this time, he’d be out in a flash again.

“But you’re eighteen now.” He’d be tried as an adult.

“So are you,” he challenged me.

“I still can’t. Remember, I’m saving myself until marriage. But I’ll wait for you. You didn’t do anything. You’ll be out soon. Way before I leave for Mississippi.” I echoed all his reassurances with a tear in my eye.

Beau kissed my hand. “You’re right. I’ll be out soon. Until then.” He slipped his silver snake pinky ring on my finger, like a promise. We kissed and practically fucked with everything, but the correct parts.

Next thing I could recall, Beau was bathed in blue light as he was being taken away in his dad’s police car.

Chapter 6

Maddie Mae

When I reached my destination, I pulled up to a large, black iron gate. An S monogrammed the surrounding stone pillars. Rolling down my window, I reached for the intercom and hit the right button.

“Hello,” a foreign voice came over the intercom.

“This is Maddie. I’m here to see Beau.”

A buzz sounded and the gate opened. I didn’t drive far before I spotted an absolute mansion in bright white. In the circular drive, a normal looking man appeared to park my car and suddenly, I was embarrassed about the dusty rental Sky and I had trekked across the country. But when I stepped out of the vehicle, Beau materialized as handsome as in his pictures.

Wearing a cowboy hat and a big smile with his jeans and t-shirt, he took my hand and pressed his lips to it. “Maddie Mae, it’s like a dream come true.”

I felt like a princess.

Beau searched me up and down, his eyebrows floating. He liked what he saw.

Years of staying in shape for my husband suddenly seemed worth it again.

“I haven’t seen you in a coon’s age. How ya been?”

“Horrible, to be honest.” I blurted out. “I just got divorced.”

Beau put his hand to his heart. “Bless your heart. Me, too. Well, a few years ago.”

His hand landed on the small of my back, as he went to show me inside the doors twice my height. He wasn’t mad at all, and there were no questions about me waiting for him. About why I hadn’t. He talked about his ex-wife and son while I told him about my family. An easy smile spread across my face. My shoulders relaxed. Beau had grown up. Taking my hand, he showed me his lavish mansion.

The ultra-tall ceilings, two story windows, dazzling chandeliers and white everything impressed until we came to a room looking like it was carved out of dark wood and marble. Just the scale of the house was awe inspiring. Although a two-story, the house was as tall as a five-story building.

Beau took me out on the balcony overlooking the big pool with organic edges. “I can’t believe there’s a house like this in Tennessee.” I sounded stupid. “I mean, there are mansions like this in California, of course.”

“I know. When we were growing up, I couldn’t imagine anyone lived like this. And you, a California girl. Haven’t been home in twenty years. You barely have your accent anymore. I can’t believe someone born and raised on it, don’t listen to country music, and that you haven’t heard of me.”

“What can I say, I needed a change. And you know I was more into Pearl Jam in high school.” I punched at his arm.

Beau took that as an invitation to grab my hand and hold it. “I figured someone would’ve told you about me.”
