“What does it say?” I didn’t have my reading glasses on.

“Says he’s a two-time Grammy nominee. He’s won an AMA for a song called Boots a Blazing.” She laughed. “He’s just some country singer, mom.” Sky wasn’t impressed.

“I used to date him in high school.”

“When?”

“Senior year.” She dropped my phone and stomped off. Nothing new.

Seconds later, I found myself looking him up again, with my glasses. He had an office downtown in Nashville, so I clicked on the phone and called.

“Strictly Business,” a lady sang on the other end.

“Um, how would I get a hold of Beau Strick?”

“May I ask who’s calling?”

“Maddie Mae…” I dropped my married name and opted for my maiden name. “Wynburn.”

“And what is this regarding?”

I wracked my brain thinking of something to say. I reverted back to the comfortable. “It’s regarding his son. I’m a teacher.” Fuck. “My phone number is…”

“Hold on,” she interrupted me. “I’ll forward your call.”

“Hello,” Beau’s voice sounded panicked. “What about Johnny?”

“Um. I’m sorry. I don’t know about your son. Must be some sort of misunderstanding.”

I hung up.

In ten minutes, my phone rang.Might be Beau Strick. Siri was getting way too smart. I answered it.

“Maddie?”

“This is Maddie Mae. How did you know?”

“Maddie, from high school Maddie?”

Suddenly, I tensed up. I’d promised Beau I would wait for him. I hadn’t. He was never the kind to forgive. I started to ramble. “Yes, Maddie from high school. I just moved back to Nashville, and my neighbors asked about you. I don’t listen to country music, so I had no idea...”

He chuckled. “You’re in Nashville? You should come over. I’ll send you the address.”

“Okay. Like when?”

“Now, if you can. I’d love to catch up.”

“I can do that.”

“It’s a reunion then. I’ll be expecting you.” Beau hung up and my phone dinged with a notification. He’d sent his exact location.

I changed into my nicest outfit that could still be considered a casual dress and heels. The light blue went great with my blonde hair and didn’t come off as too flashy. I didn’t tell Sky where I was going. She had plans to meet up with her cousin Leo anyway. Leonora was my dad’s brother’s daughter who Sky became close to on her trips to Nashville to see my mom as a kid. Leo had stayed in California with us a time or two as well. And now it seemed for once in their lives the girls would finally get to spend some real time with each other. It was the only thing Sky was excited about.

Beau lived outside of Nashville, in Brentwood. On the drive, I thought about our last day together.

At Shelby Park, at our spot, I sat in Beau’s lap. He kissed my ear.

He’d given me a cigarette, and I sucked on it like candy.
