“I don’t really keep up with anyone from high school. Plus, I’m old. I’m not hip to the new music.”

He chuckled. “Hell, we are old. I barely know any new stuff myself, other than the country artists I work with.”

“The only musicians I know are the one’s my kids listen to honestly. All of them have face tattoos and sing about skirts.”

Beau laughed again. “I can’t believe you had four kids.” Raising my arm, he twirled me around. “Look at that body. What do you do to stay in shape?”

“Seems easy in California. There’s always something to do outside, the weather’s so nice. Tennis mostly, anymore.”

Beau brought me against him. I glanced up to see him chew his bottom lip while he looked at me. “I have a court. Ex-wife had it built, but I ain’t half bad. Want to play?” The way he asked, I didn’t feel like he was talking about tennis.

“Not today,” I breathed.

He stared into my eyes. I’d forgotten how beautiful his eyes smiled when he was happy. “I have horses. Want to go for a ride?” Again, with the sex filled voice.

“Maybe next time.”

“I like that, Maddie. Next time.”

“I really can’t stay long. Sky and I just got in.”

Beau let go of me. “You must be worn out from all that driving.”

“Not really. We got a hotel last night so we only drove three hours this morning.”

“You have to have a late lunch before you get back on the road.”

That was something I could agree to. We headed down the huge staircase to the kitchen.

“You gluten free, got any allergies, vegan?”

“No. I’m just regular, I guess.”

“I’m just checking cause of all that time you spent in California.” Beau was full of jokes and so pleasant. Nothing like I remembered.

His cook made us lunch, while we waited by the pool at a marble table that looked like it belonged indoors. Beau took off the cowboy hat before he poured us a glass of white wine in the meantime. Sipping my drink, I studied his hairline that was very much the same as always. That was a relief. Looking around at the beautiful grounds, I thought of my mom’s house on the cul-de-sac, where if I sat on the back porch, I’d stare into someone else’s kitchen.

“This is the life. You’ve really made it. In California, we had money. Well, my husband had money, but nothing like this.”

“In California, I wouldn’t be able to afford this place.”

“That’s definitely true.”

We laughed.

Selma brought out a fancy chicken salad sandwich and fruit. Beau ate a strawberry, causing a sudden memory to surface. He and I had never gone all the way, but we’d explored each other’s bodies plenty. Like only two horny inexperienced teenagers could. Although, it was a distant memory, all I could think of was the first time a guy had my nipple in his mouth. That guy had been Beau. The first dick I’d seen, touched or licked, had been his.

I could barely eat, thinking about how I was sitting across from a man who’d done about everything to me but the main event.

“Want to go for a swim?” Beau tried again when Selma cleared our plates.

The cool April weather didn’t lend itself to a swim, but Beau said the pool was heated.

I refused again. “I don’t have a suit.”

“It never stopped you before.” Beau said, dragging his shirt off over his head. As I studied his rippling muscles, a memory of skinny dipping with him ran through me. It’d been dark, and we hadn’t been alone. His brother Bubba and another girl had been with us. To think of what would’ve happened if we had been alone.

Beau pulled off his cowboy boots and unlatched his belt with the large belt buckle.
