“To our badass captain for finally teaching North Shore bitches we aren’t fucking scared of their asses!!!”

The crowd of Stoneview lacrosse players goes wild at Ciara’s words and everyone downs their drinks for the tenth cheer of the night. I down my solo cup full of whatever cocktail Em made me. It’s sweet enough that I don’t really taste the alcohol and I’ve had way too many of these.

I couldn’t believe it on Monday morning when Emily jumped me by our lockers to scream that we had won the tournament. The game against N.S. High was pushed to the afternoon and my team won. Without me, but they won.

I couldn’t have known before because I’ve officially been phoneless for a week. Not just that, but Mom waits for me at the door when I come back from school. She drives me to and from the café for work and I’ve had no contact with anyone apart from school for a whole week.

So, on this Friday night, I decided to sneak out of the house for the first time in my life. I can’t even imagine Mom’s fury if she finds out, but I needed to celebrate our win with everyone. Who would have thought punching Billie Scott in the face would have made everyone in Stoneview Prep love me so much? But that’s not why I’m so happy.

No, the reason I’m over the moon is standing right in front of me, getting her picture taken with her signed offer of a lacrosse scholarship to Duke. It’s pretty much a miracle after everything that went down last Saturday, but I’m so happy for Rose. I don’t think Nathan knows, otherwise, she probably wouldn’t be here right now.

Two arms wrap around my waist and lift me up. I recognize Cole’s drunken voice and I shriek like the typical drunk girl I am right now.

“You’re so fucking perfect, ‘Me,” he mumbles in my ear and somehow I know he’s just being a great friend and not hitting on me.

After the pre-tournament party and the state he saw me in, I think we both unofficially agreed our relationship would never go further than friendship.

I stumble when he puts me down. I really drank too much, and so has Em. I don’t know how we’re going to get home…but who cares right now?

“I need the restroom,” Em shouts in my ear. “Come!”

I follow her to the bathroom on the second floor of the Bakers’ house. The last time I was using one of Luke’s guest bathrooms, it was to get my revenge on Jake. Tonight, I don’t want to hear from or see him. It’s enough that my mom lost it last time she confronted the Whites, but it’s also a night where I want to enjoy myself free of drama. Jake is never free of drama.

“The room is spinning,” Em giggles, sitting on the toilet seat, her lace panties around her ankles.

I laugh back at her and nod my head in agreement. Talking is so hard right now. Only the bass from the music downstairs makes it up to this room and it makes it all feel surreal.

“Should we do more shots?” Em suggests as she washes her hands.

“That sounds…like a really good idea,” I reply before jumping on the spot.

“’Me…” she starts seriously.

“What?” I gulp. This sounds like drama, I don’t want drama.

“I can’t believe you punched someone in the face.”

She explodes laughing and I’m close behind. Who would have thought?

Our walk down the hallway to try and reach the stairs is not exactly the easiest. Every few steps we can’t help but laugh at the most ridiculous things. We have to hold onto the walls and I’m pretty sure we both end up rolling on the floor at some point. It doesn’t stop us from hearing a familiar voice behind one of the doors, and more specifically the moans.

“Holy shit, it’s Camila,” Em whispers.

My heart drops in my stomach instantly. Is she with-

“She’s not with Jake,” Em insists. “I saw him in the backyard through the bathroom window.”

“Oh…” I don’t want to go back to feeling so happy because I now know it’s not him, but I guess I still can’t help it. “How do you even know what Camila sounds like when she’s having sex?”

“I just know,” Em nods like an old wise man with a hundred years of knowledge.

“Did she just say spit in my mouth?!” I choke.

“Yeah,” Em shrugs. “What? Luke spits in my mouth all the time.”

“Oh so you admit you’re back with him?”
