Page 89 of Giving Up

This sounds so good it makes my heart swell with hope, even if I know we’re far from our ideal world.

“We could,” I lie as the tears start flowing freely.

“No.”

Ah. Welcome back, Jake the sociopath. All sort of warmth has gone from his body and the coldness of that simple word seeps through my bones.

“Don’t give up on us, Jake,” I beg him in one last attempt.

“We both gave up on each other. I did when I didn’t fight for you, and you did when you slept with Nate. You need to stick in that smart brain of yours that any sex between us doesn’t mean shit to me. Our relationship…it’s beyond repair. I’ll never forgive you. And when you find out…” He stops himself short.

“Find out what?” I press.

“You’ll never forgive me either,” he simply replies.

He doesn’t talk again until he’s fully clothed. “Go to bed, Jamie.”

How does he expect me to go to bed after what happened? After what he just dropped on me? How am I expected to focus on lacrosse when I know Jake is hiding something from me? Something I wouldn’t forgive him for.

CHAPTER 14

Wreak Havoc – Skylar Grey

Jamie

“White!” Coach T. shouts at Rose. “I thought I just told everyone to be quiet.”

Rose gives him a charming smile and steps away from Ciara.

“As I was saying, now is not the time to rest on your laurels. I get that you girls are ecstatic about the results against St Anne, but it was a tie. You didn’t win, you simply did better than last year. And guess what? North Shore High beat them by five points.”

My heart drops in my stomach. We missed the St Anne versus N.S. High game because we were playing our own game at that time.

“How?” I choke. We’re better than them.

“I’m glad someone is listening.” He turns to the whiteboard behind him. We went over our plays yesterday, so instead of his usual drawings, there are two positions, two numbers, and two last names.

DEFENSE 13 SCOTT

CENTER 20 EVANS

“Are we seriously worried about Billie Scott?” Rose chortles. “She’s about half my height.”

“She could be on Ashley,” I mumble as I focus on both names and numbers. Fucking Billie, it wasn’t enough for her to steal Jake. She also had to ruin my tournament.

We knew N.S. High’s new center was going to be a challenge. I watched her play her first game and she is a fast one. But I would have never expected Billie to be a problem. She’s a tiny girl, like me, she’s a year younger, and it’s her first time playing the tournament. I guess she might not scare Rose, but our other straight attack, Ashley Stuart, is not as fearless as my friend.

“She’s strong, she’s fast, and she’s good at fouling without being noticed.”

“Typical North Shore,” Ciara huffs.

“I don’t care about the little teenage feud going on between Stoneview and North Shore High, but I will be damned if you girls make me lose my last tournament because you think you’re better than them. You will only beat them if you focus, if you remember our plays, and if you play hard and smart. Stuart, you’re not on the starting lineup for this one. You will be useless against their new defense. Clayton, you take over.”

I turn to Melissa Clayton and look her up and down. She’s smiling proudly and giving a nasty look to Ashley.

“Hey,” I snap. “Focus. Your aim is not to score, it’s to drive their defense out so Rose can score. Don’t turn this into the Melissa Clayton show because you get to start the game.”

It’s important to remind Stoneview girls that not everything is about them, they love the attention too much. At least Melissa is brave enough to take on multiple defense players at once if Rose goes for the goal.
