Page 69 of Giving Up

I take decisive steps toward him and watch as his artistically tattooed fingers flick the bud of the cigarette, and he steps on it.

“Hi,” he smiles once I stop in front of him.

“What do you want?” I question harshly. I can’t show weakness in front of him. Not when I’m already so vulnerable.

“I don’t want anything,” he muses as he stands straight again, gaining height on me.

“Then what are you doing here?” I take a step back to keep some safe distance between us.

“Keeping an eye on you because Jake can’t keep his dick in his pants.”

His words push my brows together, poking at my good old curiosity.

“What do you mean by that?”

“Do you need me to draw you the meaning of not keeping one’s dick in his pants?”

I roll my eyes but my body surprises itself when a short laugh crosses my lips, tainting the air with the truth of how relaxed I suddenly feel.

“Imeant–”

“I know what you meant. If I wanted to explain to you why I’m here, I would have.”

That’s reminder enough for me. “Yeah, you’d have no problem lying about it either.”

“Jamie,” he sing-songs. “I don’t want to get into another conversation about which one of us really is the bad guy in our relationship.”

“Wasthe bad guy in our relationship, we’re not a thing anymore.”

He chuckles. “I’m dying to fix that once and for all.”

“Keep dying,” I scoff.

“You’re hurting my feelings, ‘Me.”

“You’re hurting your own feelings when you hang onto us.”

He takes a step forward, standing close in a warning. His voice matches his stance. “Why are you trying to fight me? I was just checking on you.”

“I don’t need to be checked on.”

He nods slowly, going back to his initial position. “It was nice to see you, ‘Me.”

His behavior is killing my need for knowledge. Why does he need to check on me? And why is he just dropping it?

He goes to open his car when something strikes me. I woke up this morning to a text from Rose saying Nathan had categorically refused to sign the slip for the tournament. This is my chance to help.

“You know who you should check on?” I call out as he opens his door. He looks up, raising an eyebrow. “Your sister. The way you supposedlyprotecther from Bianco is not sustainable. It’s cruel and it’s selfish. You’re acting like you’re worried for her but you’re the one who brought her and Jake back into your dangerous world. You have no reason to act the way you do, except that you’re a sadistic fuck. You want to do a good deed? Don’t check on me, just let Rose go to the tournament.”

I’m not entirely sure Nathan knows exactly what Bianco has been doing to Rose, but I can only assume he does since he’s the one who kicks her out when his boss comes to his house.

He huffs, pulling his sleeves up, that thing he does when he’s getting worked up. “Not this fucking lacrosse slip again.”

“If you didn’t want to deal with teenage stuff, you should have left the parenting to the Murrays,” I grumble. “I guess you were just that desperate to become a dad.”

“Well, you never wanted to call me Daddy, I had to find another way.”

I pinch my lips hard.
