Rose starts the car, and I can see in the rearview mirror that Emily has lost her smile.

“Are we stealing Samuel Thomas’ car? The same guy that could probably take on the three of us with one hand?”

“Don’t worry about that,” Rose chuckles.

We put ‘Show Out’ by Kid Cudi loud as we get to the other side of the Falls to get us right in the mood for the party.

Tonight is going to be great. Just for one night, fuck being Goody.

CHAPTER 6

Into It – Chase Atlantic

Jamie

The small living room and kitchen are packed with people of all ages. I’ve seen more guns and bags of drugs than people over the age of twenty-one that’s for sure. But hey, tonight, I really don’t care. The lights are out apart from some blue and pink neon on the walls, and the smoke of cigarettes and joints is making the room foggy enough that I can barely see people’s faces. It doesn’t matter, I don’t have anyone to recognize anyway.

This whole house looks like I’ve entered another dimension. People are grinding on each other, sweaty and high. On the kitchen table, there are only crushed solo cups and what looks like an empty kegger. There’s broken glass but no unlimited alcohol like there is at the parties in Stoneview. No, here everyone is holding their bottles in their hands. Most have a bottle in one hand and a joint in the other. Wearing Emily’s clothes, I fit right in with the other girls barely wearing anything and confident enough to rock leather pants with a bra only. I love this place.

Rose makes her way through the crowd in her casual gray sweater and jeans. Weirdly, she still looks just as cool as the other girls wearing completely opposite outfits. It’s just the vibe she sends. The kind I could never have.

“Rose!” Some girl shouts over the music. I recognize ‘Lightswitch’ from Chaii and I’m glad to have the same taste as the person who controls the music here. The kind no one listens to in Stoneview.

Emily and I give each other a look as the girl pushes someone out of the way to get to our friend. She goes on her toes to hug Rose and we both notice the tattoo of a dagger with NSC on the handle. It’s on the side of her upper arm. She belongs to the North Shore Crew. Emily’s eyes widen before she smiles at me.

“Holy shit,” she mouths.

I can’t help a giggle. We’re in this deep. Might as well have fun now.

Both girls in front of us cross the room with us in tow. They finally stop in front of a group of two guys and a girl all leaning against the wall furthest from the door. The girl, I recognize all too well.

“Emma, look who’s here,” the chick holding Rose’s arm squeaks. Good to know she has the same effect on North Shore girls as she has on Stoneview’s.

Emma, whom Nathan introduced to me only a week ago, focuses on Emily and me. Her matte blue lips spread in a grin as the look of recognition brightens in her gray eyes.

“You brought some friends, I see,” she says. I can’t read how she feels about it.

“Yeah,” is all that Rose replies as she lights up a cigarette. I like that she doesn’t feel she has to justify herself for bringing us.

Rose introduces Emily and me to Emma, the other girl, Tamar, and the two guys, Dylan and Xi.

“Nice bra,” Emma teases me, repeating exactly what I had said to her in front of Nathan.

My cheeks blush at the reminder. I become too aware that my bra is more than obvious under my white see-through tank top.

She chuckles at my reaction followed by a gorgeous smile. “I’m fucking with you. It’s nice to see you again.”

I smile back but can see the ‘what the fuck is this about’ look on Emily’s face from the corner of my eye.

“I hope you guys are ready to party.” Emma picks something at her feet and only now do I realize the huge bright pink platforms that give her an extra four inches. Without them, she’d probably be about my height and for some reason, it makes me like her more. She comes back up in a wave of bleached blond hair and extensions and brandishes a bottle of supermarket-branded tequila, the cap already off.

“To N.S. fucking C,” she cheers before taking a few sips.

There’s a round of approval from the guys and some other people around us. Emma passes the bottle to Xi.

“To Rose bringing cute friends,” he says earnestly.

His deep voice vibrates low in my belly, and I instinctively bite my lower lip to stop a smile when his dark eyes land on me. He takes a few sips, and the bottle passes around.
