“’Me, comeon!” Emily grabs my upper arms and squeezes.

“Ugh, Em!” I groan, my head falling back.

“Just think! Do you want to go to a boring, uptight, preppy Stoneview party or do you want to live a little? Be adventurous? We both know if nothing’s happened with Cole yet it’s because you need some real bad boy in your life and you will find exactly what you’re looking for on the North Shore.”

My stomach twists in anticipation when she mentions bad boys. I hate the term, but I can’t deny the excitement coursing through my veins at the idea of leaving preppy boys behind and going headfirst into danger.

A house party on the North Shore of the Falls. It’s a terrible, terrible idea. Dangerous, stupid…

Thrilling.

“Fine,” I sigh.

“Great. Now with a little more enthusiasm,” Emily orders. She really is pushing it, isn’t she?

“Fine!” I scream. “Let’s party in fucking NSF!”

“Language.” Rose’s raspy voice is closer than I expected.

“You don’t mind if we come with you, Rose, right?Right?” Emily taunts.

Rose rolls her eyes. “I swear if I have to get either of you out of a shit situation–”

“You won’t have to,” Emily cuts her off. “We’re big girls.”

Rose collects some stuff around the table, mainly weed and cigarettes, some cash, and turns to us again.

“This is all great but, Emily, you sure you want to show up like this at an NSC party?”

“What?” she gasps looking down at herself.

“It’s a bit…Stoneview,” Rose laughs.

“Well, yeah. That’s the point,” Emily smiles. “’Me is looking sexy as hell, she’ll fit right in. You’ve got…” she looks at Rose’s plain outfit from top to bottom “…a black eye. You’ll fit right in. And I’ll be the cute, innocent Stoneview Prep girl who really doesn’t like gangbangers.” She gives us a pout as she blinks innocently at us. Rose and I explode laughing.

We spend another hour or so drinking some more and by the time we get out of the room, I’m a lot tipsier than when I came in.

“So what made you change your mind?” I ask Rose as we pick up our coats in the hallway. “You texted me asking if I wanted a ride to Cole’s party and by the time we got to your house you were planning to go to the North Shore.”

“Another argument with Nate,” she replies casually. “Heconfiscatedmy car keys like I’m some sort of rebellious teenager who needs parenting from him. I just need to piss him off a little more. What’s better than showing up at a party with his little gang?”

“Great idea,” Emily reacts. “And I’ve got my car!”

Rose cracks a laugh as she grabs another cigarette from her pocket. “Emily, you’re the cutest but your Lamborghini won’t last five minutes in NSF. We’re gonna get carjacked the second we cross the bridge. Or it’ll be stolen by the time you come out of the party.”

Emily’s face drops as we both struggle to understand how we’re going to make it to the North Shore of the Falls.

“Stoneview cabs don’t go to the other side of the bridge,” Emily explains.

“Oh I know that,” Rose smiles. “But don’t worry, we have one car we knowfor sureno one will touch there.”

Rose goes to a side room and comes back with what I’m assuming is a set of keys in her shut fist.

When she opens the white SUV outside, my heart rate doubles. The last time I was in this car, I had just spent the night at the police station after Jake’s and Nate’s big fight. My body shivers at the memory.

“I don’t see how this car won’t get robbed in NSF. It’s really nice.” Emily runs a hand on the white paint.

“Yep,” Rose confirms as she gets in the driver’s seat. I get in the passenger seat and Emily at the back. “But they’rewaytoo scared of Sam to touch his car.”
