Page 155 of Giving Up

It’s hard to keep a straight face saying that. Kay is one of the best fucks of my life, but she could never be my girlfriend. She’s rude and cunning. She’s a tough, dangerous girl. She’s untamable and the fact that I take immense pleasures trying doesn’t mean I could ever achieve it.

“Your girlfriend?” Jamie repeats slowly as if tasting the words on her lips.

“’Me, I know I wasn’t a great guy to you, but I’ll never forget what I experienced with you, and I know you won’t either. I love you…” She opens her mouth to say something, but I don’t let her. “…butI love my brother more. And Jake? He loves you more than life itself.”

“He doesn’t want to be with me,” she whispers in shame. “I know what it looks like from the outside, we break up and we can’t keep away from each other. But every time he touches me, he makes sure to remind me we’re not getting back together.”

“Believe me, everything he has done was to protect you. There are reasons we are all so scared of Bianco. He wasn’t just an abusive foster parent. He is a psychopathic sadist with unlimited resources. Jake was a good kid. Bianco killed that kid and replaced him with the Jake you know. He’s terrified of him like a child of the monster under their bed. As clumsy as his ways were, Jake was trying to protect you from that monster. More than I was, that’s for sure.”

It’s not as hard as I thought to step down. I think deep down I’ve always known that Jake loves Jamie with the kind of love you only find once in your life. He’d sacrifice everything for her and the way it’s heading right now, he’ll probably sacrifice both him and her.

If I don’t try to help them, I would have failed my brotherandJamie. All the sacrifices, all the years trying to keep their heads above water, they would have been for nothing.

“Here’s what you’re going to do tonight. Jake is fighting on the North Shore of the Falls. You’re going to go there and talk him out of it, you’re both going to go to your house and wait until I tell you that Bianco has been dealt with.”

She nods strongly, ready to follow the plan. “What about Rose?”

I wish I had met someone as selfless as Jamie earlier in my life. It’s a breath of fresh air, maybe I wouldn’t have ended up with no moral compass. Who knows?

“Rose is safe,” I smile. “She’s spending the weekend at the Murrays.”

“I thought you’d have asked Sam to keep an eye on her,” she smiles knowingly, telling me that she knows the strong feelings they have for each other.

“Sam is in love with my sister. He loses his head around her and becomes useless. Besides, I need him with me. What’s the point of having a giant friend made of only muscles if you can’t use him to your advantage occasionally?”

She breaks a small smile, but her face stays worried.

“I don’t know how to talk Jake out of a fight. He does anything Bianco says. He’s scared of him.”

“As he should be. Jamie, listen to me. Bianco is out of his damn mind. Nothing he does is rational anymore. He was fuming after seeing you at our house. The kind of fight he’s forcing Jake into, everyone sends their best fighters. Their beasts. Sam is the only one Bianco ever sent to this place…” Fuck, I’m actually scared to say the worlds out loud. “…I don’t know if Jake can handle it.”

Aka, I don’t know if Jake will come out of it alive.

“Jake is a really strong fighter,” I add to reassure the both of us. “But he’s not invincible. The kind of fights Bianco puts together on the North Shore are to impose his reign on any gangs that dare go against him. And other gangs use it to try and take over him. It’s not the kind of fights Jake should get into.”

Her loud gulp stirs something in my guts. I guess that would be guilt for putting her in this situation. I don’t tell her the one detail that will make her mission particularly difficult. She doesn’t have to know.

“I will drop you off and go handle Bianco. You get Jake out of there and stay at your house. Got it?”

She only nods in return.

“Nathan? You said you finally had everything you needed against Bianco. Why not before? What changed?”

I smile at her awareness. Jamie is such a smart girl, I always wonder how she loses her brain so easily when it comes to love.

“Last weekend, he found Rose and Chris Murray alone at home. That evening, while the twins had escaped to the Murrays’, Mateo invited some guys over. There was a lot of alcohol, a lot of anger. I got a real good beating from him and his friends. But Mateo wasn’t satisfied, he still had that rage in him. So… he killed one of his guys with his bare hands.”

Her eyes are so wide I wonder how they haven’t popped out yet.

“That had never happened before. Bianco always uses people to do his bidding. Not that night. The free life is over for him.”

Yeah. That fucker got what was coming for him. And it might have taken me nine fucking years, but shit it feels so good to know that he’s going to end up in the worst penitentiary being raped by his cellmates.

And mostly, my siblings will live the carefree life they deserve.

Jamie

I jump out of Nathan’s car like my life depends on it. I think it does. Because my life is directly linked to Jake’s, and if anything happens to him tonight, I will not be able to carry on without him.
