“Nathan, that’s insane…that’s…how?”

Ignoring her shock, I get to where I finally wanted to.

“I must apologize, though. In my quest for revenge, by wanting to protect my siblings, I’ve put you in danger.”

“You didn-”

“I did. I sent the Wolves after you because they knew you were important to me. But mainly, I put you on Bianco’s radar.”

“How?”

“There are a few people Bianco trusts. People that will never turn their back on him. When Bianco falls, I will take his place, and those people will never ally with me. I’ve been slowly getting rid of them.”

“Getting rid of them?”

I roll my eyes because she has been through so much and yet her youth still makes her so gullible sometimes.

“I’ve been killing them, Jamie. Or Sam has. I need them out of the way for my plans to work. Plans you don’t need to be made aware of.”

“Nathan-”

“Bianco started clocking that his most trusted people were disappearing. It’s been driving him sick with paranoia. Now, this is a sick twist of fate, but it happens to have been at the same time that your brother has been back in Stoneview. Don’t ask me why he’s here, or how, I really don’t fucking know. I didn’t know he was alive until Bianco told Jake and I.”

“But he is. And he is a Wolf, our enemies. Bianco has been putting those deaths on him. And he associates you with him. It’s my fault and I’m sorry but I promise you I will never let anything happen to you. You have to trust me on that. I am ready to take Bianco down and he will be gone before he can put his hands on you, I promise you, on my life.”

I can tell this is a lot to take by the way her eyes keep darting from one of my eyes to the other, playing ping-pong, trying to figure out if I just made up the craziest story of her fucking life or if it’s true.

The problem with life is, the wildest stories, the most unbelievable ones are usually the real ones. People tend to either make up half-assed lies for more attention, or tone down their crazy stories so people believe them.

“I can’t believe this… I… I thought I was hating you for good reasons. I thought it would be morally wrong to keep seeing you,” she sighs. “But you’re not the bad guy.”

I laugh loud enough that some heads turn our way.

“Come on, ‘Me, you know me by now. I am a horrible man. I’m selfish and borderline psychopathic. I’m a megalomaniac and I don’t care in the slightest about people’s feelings. But if by not being bad you mean I don’t want my siblings to have a horrible life, then yeah, I guess I’m notthatbad.”

My phone rings on the table and the nameKayshows up on the screen. Huh, talking about being bad, here’s one girl who gets my worst side. A side I would never show Jamie. I turn my phone face down on the table, but Jamie already saw.

Her brows furrow, her eyes dart to the side and she pinches her lips.

She’s jealous.

“Everything all right?” I ask.

“Who’s Kay?” she huffs in reply. She already asked before, and I already ignored it.

“Oh, ‘Me,” I chuckle. “Will you ever be able to make your choice?”

“I’m not in love with you, Nathan,” she answers.

“Just possessive,” I smile back.

“I’m not possessive,” she growls. “It’s not easy to erase someone who made you feel such strong feelings for the first time in your life. It doesn’t mean I’m not completely and hopelessly in love with Jake.”

“I just keep getting in the way,” I chuckle. I stare at her in silence before carrying on. “That’s because you’re right. Itishard to forget someone who makes you feel so strongly…for the first time.”

Her eyes widen slightly at my admission. It’s hard to be in love with Jamie Williams. She has that kind of flawed perfection that leaves a mark on your soul. It’s a beauty that radiates from the inside and blinds you until you completely forget who you are, who you’re meant to be, and just become a soul living through her.

“Kay is my girlfriend,” I lie. “I do have to get over you at some point, don’t I?”
