Page 128 of Giving Up

I don’t even listen to his answer. I’ve got places to be.

There are two guys from the Kings Crew when I get to my car. North Shore knows by now who the nice car belongs to, and yet these two fuckers have a death wish.

The violence in my steps is already putting fear in them as I approach. I don’t even stop for them. I open the door and turn to them before I settle in.

“Look at this car too closely again, and I’ll give you nice holes to go with those tattoos on your necks,” I hiss, pointing at the crowns on their necks.

I take my gun out and put it on the passenger’s seat for effect, and then I’m out of here.

It takes three tries for Ozy to pick up.

“Where thefuckare you?” I snap. Why is she always so slow at picking up?

“On my way to Chris’. I’m not exactly liking your North Shore gangster attitude. Why the anger?”

“I’ll meet you there,” I growl as I hung up.

I floor it to my best friend’s house, but it still takes me too long to my liking.

The moment I walk into the basement den, Chris is on me, grabbing me by the t-shirt and pushing me against the wall.

“I hope you have really fucking good explanations,” he growls in my ear.

“You know what,” I rage. “I don’t have to explain shit to you!” I push back and he easily lets go, taking a couple steps back, but the anger is palpable.

“I don’t want to fight with you, man. I just want to get this sorted,” I admit.

“She told me everything, Jake. Everything you did. Everything she forgave, and that’s what you give back? You destroy her life?”

“I didn’t fucking do it!” I shout. “That document has been gone for months!”

“The girl is sick of love for you! Do you understand that? She’d fucking die for you, for the toxic bastard you are. You broke her. You knew there was no hope for you two and you kept going, kept pushing like a greedy fucker.”

A loud, hysterical laugh breaks out of my lungs. “I’m a toxic bastard? A greedy fucker? Then, please, my friend, tell me what you are?” I extend an arm as if presenting a show. I even slightly bow my head to push the sarcasm.

“What the fuck are you on about?” he fights back.

“Ah, come on Chris, we’re between bastards who break girls for their own pleasures here. Don’t be shy.”

He shakes his head, but I know he’s starting to see where I’m going with this.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he lies.

“I’m talking about Ella. Yoursecretgirlfriend.”

He takes a step back, wind knocked out of him, as his eyes widen.

“Looks like I hit the jackpot of all the deadly secrets,” I smile. “So you want to tell me again how there’s no hope for me and Jamie? Tell me, Chris, do you think there’s a lot of hope for you and your best friend’s sister?”

He shakes his head. “Don’t fucking bring her into this.”

“You’re lying to Luke every day while you fuck her behind his back! Bro, you fucked her while we were all sleeping at your house. You’re a shit friend.”

“I–”

“You always talk to me like you’re an almighty god that never does anything wrong. But I think just this once, it’d be good if you take a seat.”

He runs a hand behind his neck, kneading at it, his big sign that he’s stressed, before looking at me again.
