“What thefuckare you doing here?” she spits at me.
She’s on my side of the desk the next second. She laughs as she brings the sleeves of her sweater up.
“The bitch really does have a death wish,” she says to her three girlfriends behind me.
“I didn’t come for you,” I growl back.
“You didn’t come for me? Funny because I’m definitely coming for you.”
“I don’tcareabout you, Billie,” I try to explain as calmly as possible.
A chair scrapes against the floor and my gaze goes back to Jake as he gets up, zips up his jeans, and slowly walks around the desk before leaning against it.
“I won’t defend you again, Jamie. We’ve had countless conversations about our breakup, and I’m tired of repeating that you should accept it. Camila took it easy compared to you and if letting Billie and her girls beat the shit out of you is the only way for you to stay in your place, I’m not about to get in the way of that.”
“You’re a real fucking asshole, you know that?” I tremble with anger as I feel my fists tighten and my nails dig into my palms.
“I have nothing to say to you,” he concludes. Or at least, he thinks it concludes our conversation.
“Nothing to say to me? Oh, Jake,” I laugh dryly. “I’m not here to listen to you. I’m here to tell you that you went too far. And if you think you’re going to get away with what you did, you’re about to wake the fuck up. Believe me.”
It’s his turn to laugh and I hear the others chuckle as well. Especially Billie.
“Jamie. Let. Go.” He runs a hand through his hair and shakes his head. “You can get other dicks; you’ve proven it countless times before.”
“For the love of God, will you shut up about you and your dick?! Do you think this is funny?!” I shout as I get closer to him. “Your God complex is acting up again. You arenothing, do you understand? You are lower than hell. You are the biggest regret of my life!Youbroke up andyoucouldn’t stay away.”
He pushes away from the desk and stands tall above me.
“Jake, man, you never said your ex was a psycho. Watch out.” I don’t even know who said that, some guy.
“Watch out?” he chuckles. “Have you seen her? What is she gonna do, she’s the size of a doll. A doll I’m done playing with.”
“I’m going to out everything you did. I’m going to go to the police, I’ll tell them about the blackmail, about what you did to me. About the gun. I’ll end you,” I rage through gritted teeth.
“You’re out of your fucking mind,” he seethes back. “When did you turn into a crazy bitch?”
“I’m out of my mind? Me?! You turned us in! You put my mom in jail! Why? Why thefuckwould you do this? Was it revenge?”
His brows furrow as he shakes his head.
“What?” he says at the same time as Billie behind me.
“Don’t act innocent now!” I shout with fury. “Why did you do it?! Is it because I slept with Nathan? Is it because of Cole? You broke up with me, Jake.Youbrokemyheart. You shouldn’t have cared how I fixed it.”
When he doesn’t say anything, I press my hands against his chest to give him a big push.
“Answer me! Why did you do it?! You told me you had deleted that document. Why would you lie to me? Was this all a game to you? Break my heart all you want, humiliateme, play withme, terrifyme. But my mom? My mom, Jake…” My voice starts breaking as the tears rise to my eyes.
“Jamie, I didn’t–”
“Don’t lie to me! She’s being interrogated as we speak. All we did was steal a few thousand from billionaires! Do you really think it is going to change their lives? Because it changed ours. It allowed me to pay for my uniform and the lacrosse tournaments. It allowed me to buy new clothes to look pretty for you. My phone, my bike repairs when your ex bullied me.” I shake my head, still not being able to swallow the news properly.
He takes a step back as if finally realizing the extent of what he’s done. His mouth opens and closes but nothing comes out.
I came here to shout, to hurt him, to threaten him with actions I well intend to take if my mom doesn’t get out of this situation. But facing him like that, my defenses still go down, like wanting to prove to him that he just went too far.
“She’s all I have, Jake,” I finish with a trembling voice. I can’t even pretend to be strong right now because I have nothing and no one.
