“Jake. Where can I find him?”

“Are you guys still trying to make this work? You gotta let it go, baby.”

“Where?” I insist.

“I don’t keep track of him.”

I roll my eyes. Great, thanks for the help.

“But I do keep track of Billie, and they’re usually pretty close to the other.”

I don’t even have to pretend this doesn’t hurt me. Jake has gone too far and him dating or fucking Billie is the last thing I’m worried about. It’s the last thing that hurts me.

“Okay, well where can I find the lovely Billie?” I spread the bitchiest smile on my face.

“Probably enjoying some lunchtime fuck at the back of the building. Room 159 is her place.”

He stops me when I turn around to leave. “I wouldn’t go through this building in a Stoneview Prep uniform. Unless you want to come back the other side dead. Or worse. I can accompany you. It would be my pleasure, especially if you and Billie are planning on having another catfight.”

“I’m fine, thanks,” I mumble.

It’s not hard to get inside N.S. High. They have a security guard watching a video on his phone by the entrance. I pass their metal detector, clearly from another school, without him even batting an eyelash. There’s a sign indicating where the rooms are. 100-130 to the left, 131-160 straight ahead, at the end of the hallway that leads toward the back of the building.

Lunchtime. Crowds of students are by their rundown lockers. Groups of people are spread out, going about their activities. One guy suddenly pushes another against a graffitied wall, whispering threats low in his ear. No one is surprised, no one tries to stop them.

It’s overcrowded in here. Too many students, not enough space. There’s a tension weighing in the air between some groups, and I’m instantly taken back to Emily telling me about the tensions between the North Shore Kings and the North Shore Crew. Now that N.S.C. has Bianco’s protection, threats to the Kings are at an all-time high. But that’s not why I’m here. I don’t care about this world. I care about mine, where my mom is in jail.

“Move out of the way, bitch,” someone says behind me.

I turn to face two girls and notice their tattoos straight away. The identical ones they sport; a crown on both their shoulders. Why are they even talking to me?

“I’d like to take a piss if you don’t mind.”

I jump out of the way when I realize I’m standing in front of the bathroom door, blocking the entrance. I collect myself and re-focus. Time to get to the point.

I stride toward the end of the hallway and hell if I feel all those eyes on me. That uniform is some sort of target on my back. I have to push my way through thicker bits of the crowd, tighter spots where some people are reluctant to let me through without bothering me. I still make it to the other side with only dark looks and one guy shouting that he wanted to check if Stoneview bitches wore underwear under that slutty uniform.

The crowd thins out as I get toward the end of the hallway, and in front of room 159…nothing. Not one soul. It’s like a different world. The loud voices from behind me become background noise. I don’t know what I imagined. Someone guarding the door? People talking drugs and arms deals?

I imagine opening the door to Jake and Billie undressing each other, laughing about what he did. A new world where it’s not money that makes you important and yet still a world where Jake White is the king. Where somehow, he managed to make it to the top of the food chain.

All these thoughts add to my hatred. My fire is fueled by everything Jake and I could have become had he decided to accept me into his life. Had he wanted to save me the way I wanted to save him. Had he loved me. Instead, he decided to destroy us. To destroy me. And I’m ready to end it all.

But when I push the door open, ready to confront him, it’s anything but what I expected. I find myself entering the back of room 159 and recognize N.S. High’s lacrosse center. Evans. That fucking rocket of a girl who told me she ate Stoneview bitches for breakfast then managed to make me lose draws after draws.

The two girls she’s laughing with are the girls that were holding me still when Billie struck back after I punched her. There are two guys standing before the teacher’s desk. My heart takes a plunge when my eyes meet Lik’s.

I remember all too well when he and Jake came into my hotel room. When they tied me up and forced orgasms after orgasms out of me while they were just chilling. I remember the hardness in his pants despite Jake saying he wasn’t interested in girls. Thinking about it, I don’t think said hardness was for me. I barely have time to feel the first wave of embarrassment because Lik moves to the side with a cocky smile on his face.

Right behind him, Jake is sitting at the desk, like a king reigning on his court. There’s weed on the table, a grinder, and some papers ready to roll a joint but his hands are behind his head, fingers interlocking.

His lips are slightly parted, his eyes hooded, and that breathing…I would recognize that among everything in the world. Pleasure. Utter bliss. A smug smile spreads on his lips before his head falls backward in a murmured ‘fuck’. But it comes back up straight away, deep blue eyes interlocking with mine as his face hardens and his hand goes under the desk.

His arm tenses and he frowns at me. “Hold up, Billie. Can’t keep my dick hard suddenly.”

What?

I can feel my nostrils flare as my breathing becomes ragged with anger. Billie suddenly appears from under the desk and I must say this is not exactly what I expected, but I’m not surprised either.
