“I will always be angry about what you told me to do with Maria,” I rush out. “I just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, and you wanted me to give her away as soon as possible.”

“I was thinking about your—”

“No!” I shout. “You were thinking about yourself. And if you’re not going to apologize to me, then we’re going.”

I grab Lucas’s and Seth’s hands and pull them with me toward the reception, where several people are staring at us with wide eyes and gaping mouths. Only Dad and Diana are smiling. Dad even holds his glass up as if cheering me. Nice to know he will always have my back. The babysitters hand me Maria, who’s eyes are swollen from crying. Alex takes the large bag of toys.

For it being New York, everything feels so quiet. If a pin drops, I will be able to hear it that’s how quiet it is.

“Are you really leaving?” Mom shouts after me.

That doesn’t warrant an answer. I am so done with her treating me like a black sheep. I have better things to do with my life. I have little Maria to take care of, schoolwork to do, and the bros to be with. We still have unfinished business. I stalk toward the door. The servers open it. I can tell they’re trying to keep a straight face. They’re probably loving the drama. I doubt they see much of it in their line of work.

“Rachel!” Mom shouts.

I glance over my shoulder and meet Mom’s scowl. “If you walk out that door, I won’t ever speak to you again.”

I smirk and flick my hair over my shoulder. “Honestly, Mom, I don’t give a damn.”

And then, while holding my head high, I walk through those open doors, feeling freer than I ever have before.
