I threw my phone in my briefcase and waved at Tyler and whatever temporary assistant HR had assigned to Declan and me as I breezed by. “Can someone please cancel my afternoon meetings? I have to go out of town.”

“Are you serious?” The temp stared at me, slack-jawed.

“Sincerest apologies. You can blame me entirely. Tell them I’m a horrible boss. Because I am.” I waved at Sam’s open door. “Rayne, I’m out. I’ve got to go win over the girl.”

“Atta boy!”

Chapter 6

Margot

I was pretty proud of myself. Library seemed like a safe answer, even for someone like Jamie Calvin. I leaned against my bedroom door, glaring at my brother as he settled himself in front of the television in the living room.

“Hey Jackson, I thought you had that study group.”

“I do. They’re coming here.”

“Here?” My voice jumped two octaves.

“Yeah.” Jackson gave me an odd look. “Is that a problem? They’ve been here before.”

“Oh, sure, sorry. I’d love if they came here. I was just…surprised.” I smiled broadly, trying to convince myself that parading my billionaire landlord past my brother and a flock of other teenagers was going to be no big deal.

Not to mention they were mostly going to be pre-law students and probably knew every single thing about Windham, Rayne and Calvin, Jamie’s law firm. I was basically parading a real-life Midas around the apartment for God’s sake.

I cringed when my phone vibrated against my thigh. Slipping it free of my pocket, I swallowed hard. He was here.

Maybe I could get him in before the whole crew arrived. Dashing past a still-confused-looking Jackson, I wrenched open the door.

“Jamie, hi, I’m so…” I stuttered to silence. There on my doorstep was indeed Jamie, but he was surrounded by four high schoolers of varying heights with one thing in common. They were all staring up at Jamie with a stunned and somewhat reverent expression on their faces.

Jamie, though, was staring straight at me, a relaxed smile pulling at his lips. Even amongst this chaos and my nerves, I could actually feel the bunch and clench of my thighs and belly as I slowly smiled back at him.

I felt Jackson join us from behind. “Hey, you’re that guy from the other night.”

“Jamie Calvin. Thanks again for the help.”

Jackson reached out to shake the offered hand, his own immediately swallowed in the much larger man’s grip. “Jackson. Looks like you found her after all.”

I stared between them. So did the gaggle of teenagers still surrounding Jamie.

“Jackson and I met the other night, when I came by to find you.”

“Oh.” I let the word hang in the area awkwardly as I wondered if Jamie and I could simply make a run of it.

“Mr. Calvin, do you think we could ask you a few questions? About law school?”

Jamie’s eyes leapt to mine, seeking permission silently.

After a moment, I chuckled. “Of course, how rude of me. Jax, scoot back. Let’s get everyone inside.”

Jamie’s hand fell to my back as he somehow managed to escort me into my own home. The high schoolers followed and immediately fell upon the bags of snacks and drinks that Jackson had dragged to the coffee table. While I was thrilled that he was making friends, especially kids like him who were dreaming of a career as a lawyer, I couldn’t help but feel the pinpricks of fear as they chowed down on our grocery supply. Things were tight as it was. Feeding one teenager was hard enough, and by the looks of it, this crew was settling in for the long haul.

My face must’ve changed as I watched them, because I felt Jamie draw me close. “How about this? I answer a few questions, butter them up with pizza, and then you and I can make a run for it?”

I smiled, gratitude swelling in my chest. “That sounds perfect.” I whipped up my cell phone, my fingers shaky against the screen as I scrolled for the pizza place’s number. Just before I hit Call, Jamie’s enormous hand pulled my phone away.
