I smiled and placed my arms over his. “Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.”

Oh my God, is he going to…?

“It’s been months since we went out on a date,” he continued, his voice low and warm. “I’ve made reservations in that new French restaurant,La Coeur.”

I giggled. “Say that with a French accent. It always sounds sexier like that.”

He dropped his arms suddenly and stepped back. “You don’t think I’m sexy enough, huh?”

What? Where did that come from?

“What? No,” I said, suddenly confused by his reaction. “Of course, I think you’re hot.”

A small smile tipped the edge of his lips. “You think so?”

“Of course,” I nodded emphatically.

“Thanks, babe. It means a lot when you say that.”

I looked at his back as he walked out the door and into his car. He gave me a little wave before he got in and drove off to work. For a moment, I just stood there in the doorway with a silly smile on my face.

It had been months since Dan and I went out on a date. We usually just ordered takeout or I would cook something special and snuggled in my house while we watched a movie. He was always too tired from work to actually go out and I wasn’t really fond of going out myself.

I did prefer staying home and enjoying a cuddle session on the couch—except that Dan wasn’t that big of a cuddler and it was Buddy who usually took up that job.

The few times we did go out on dates, they were pretty big events—like that time he got a raise or that time he successfully nailed a big project at work. I hadn’t heard anything from him the past few weeks about work so maybe this really wasit.

We’d been a couple long enough that Dan might actually propose to me, I thought excitedly.

That, and the fact that I had seen a receipt in his pocket from the jewelry store.

I didn’t want to assume anything, but I would be lying if I said my thoughts weren’t heading in the matrimonial direction.

“What are you staring out the door for this morning, darling girl?”

I jumped up, startled and looked at Grandma Margaret, who was standing directly behind me with a curious look in her eyes. For someone who frequently forgot her hearing aid, she was pretty quiet. Otherwise, she would never probably have startled me like that.

Or maybe I need one of those hearing aids myself, I thought.

“Oh, nothing, Grandma,” I smiled, trying to contain my excitement. “But Dan and I are going out on a date tonight!”

“You and Dan are going to mate tonight?” she repeated with a horrified gasp.

“What? No! I said we’re going out on a date!” I defended myself, my cheeks flaring in embarrassment. “Like DINNER!” I made a gesture of sitting down to eat.

“Ah…a date,” she nodded in understanding. Then, she grimaced. “He’s being a little nice lately but I still think he’s no good for you.”

I closed the door and shook my head. Without her hearing aid, her voice was pretty loud and who knew if the neighbors heard what she really thought of my boyfriend? Over the years, Grandma Margaret had developed pretty strong opinions about many things and she had no qualms about stating them for all the world to hear.

I searched around and found her hearing aid in the living room. I helped her put them on as we settled down on the couch.

“I know that you think no one is right for me,” I smiled at her. “But he’s a nice guy. He really is.”

“I don’t know, angel, but there’s something about that boy…” she muttered. “Something about him just doesn’t sit right with me.”

You and Oliver both, I thought with a mental grimace. I knew Grandma would take Oliver’s side in this.
