Buddy barked impatiently at us both and we laughed. We crouched down to his level and began scratching him affectionately.

“We love you, too, Bud,” we chorused.

Hand in hand, Amanda and I walked into the veranda where a pitcher of iced tea waited for us. Buddy trailed in after us.
