I nodded. We each took an urn—he had Grandpa Frederick’s and I had Grandma Margaret’s—and together, we opened them both and slowly scattered the ashes into the sea.

As the fine ash slipped into the waves and the breeze, I could almost hear Grandma Margaret laughing joyfully with Grandpa Frederick chuckling right along with her.

I blinked back my tears because I knew that this was what they wanted and that they were happy wherever they were right now because they were finally together.

Even death could not keep them apart,I thought, smiling through my tears.Thank you so much for everything, Grandma Margaret, Grandpa Frederick! I would never forget everything you taught me about life and love. These lessons…I will treasure them in my heart forever.

I stood still as we scattered the last of the ashes into the sea, my tears trailing hot tracks down my cheeks. I felt sad at having to let both my grandparents go but I knew that this was what they wanted and, in a way, I washappyfor them. They were both finally free.

They were finallytogether.

Oliver hugged me from behind and pressed a soft kiss to the back of my head as he stood there silently with me. I could tell that he was pretty emotional about all this, too. After all, he loved Grandma Margaret and Grandpa Frederick like they were his real grandparents and they both loved him as if he was their real grandson.

I looked down to where our hands were joined in front of me and at the engagement ring that glimmered in my finger.

When we are married, Oliver will officially be part of the family. I bet Grandma Margaret is really happy we finally have a “hot doctor” in the family!

I nearly laughed as the memories of Grandma Margaret and our time with Oliver played out in my mind. She had been rooting for him all along and now, I knew she was probably one of the happiest about our engagement.

“I could almost hear Grandma Margaret laughing happily,” Oliver murmured. “She would have enjoyed this very much.”

I turned in his arms and smiled up at him. “Thanks to you, Iknowthat they are enjoying this very much.” I looked out into the gentle waves. “You chose the perfect spot for them. I’m sure they are very happy to be here with us.”

He pressed a soft kiss to my temple. “I bet they’re very thankful to have a granddaughter like you who crossed an ocean just to fulfill their wishes.”

I laughed. “And now, they have a grandson with a boat driver license to make sure they get there.”

In the end, everything worked out for the best—I was with the love of my life and we were getting married soon.

Oliver took out the two flower wreaths we had brought with us on the boat. We had intended to just buy two bouquets of marguerites—Grandma’s favorite flowers—but when the lady from the flower shop realized what we were going to do, she volunteered to make them into wreaths for us.

We both slid the wreaths into the water and I sat back in the boat with Oliver right beside me as we watched the flowers bob up and down in the waves. I leaned my head onto his broad shoulders and his arm went around me, holding me close as we stared out into the sea, some tears running down my cheeks.

At that moment, I was grateful to be able to share this very special moment with my greatest love. I wouldn’t have wanted to be with anyone else but him to witness this.

I was certain Grandma Margaret and Grandpa Frederick approved of it, too. After all, they both loved Oliver very much, too.

“I think it’s time we head back,” he told me softly. “It’s getting hotter and we have to return the boat.”

I nodded in agreement. The sun was already climbing steadily to the peak and we had promised to return the boat after two hours.

“Yes,” I smiled at Oliver. “Let’s head back home.”

He smiled at me and kissed me softly. “Home is wherever you are, Amanda. It took me several weeks of hell to realize that.” He held me tight. “I don’t ever want to go through that again.”

I laughed and poked a finger at him. “Well, I’m glad you think the same way I do.”

“I’ll do anything for you, you know that?” he whispered tenderly to me. “You have me wrapped around your little finger.”

“Well,” I grinned mischievously at him. “Let’s hope that your skills extend to carpentry because there is a little project that’s waiting for us at home.”

“As long as I get to do it with you, I don’t mind,” he winked at me. “I demand to be paid in kisses, though.”

I leaned in and kissed him deeply. “You can have all the kisses that you want, Oliver. I’m all yours.”

“As I am yours.”

We both smiled at each other as Oliver started the boat again. As the boat sped off back to Venice, I looked back to the waves.
