Page 60 of Losing Control

"I won't put you in unnecessary danger by making you protect me," Noah butt-in.

"Which I've respected. However, if we ever do get serious, I want you to know that whether you like it or not, I’m bringing you in. I won't allow you to get hurt when I could have prevented it."

Noah frowned and crossed his arms. "Fine. That's only if we're serious."

"Why can't any of my boys be that simple?" Mykie groaned, flopping back so she sprawled out on the floor. "I said I didn't want them involved and they act like I've betrayed them."

"The one that was here last week seemed like he didn't mind not being involved," Noah answered.

"Ryker? How'd you know he was here?" She leaned back up so she could see Noah and Dexter's expressions now that she was a part of the conversation.

Noah shrugged. "Your walls aren't that thick, and I came back because I thought I left something."

"He's a part of the Cantil, so I didn't have to have that talk with him. He's actually been helping me learn more about the Cantil, so I'll be more prepared to be the second-in-command and all that," she explained.

"Ryker who?" Dexter questioned. "You haven't mentioned him before."

"It's a long story, but I met him the same day Jezebeth’s dad...that Adam betrayed the Cantil. He's Renly's older brother and he tried to help me out at the meeting with his parents. One thing led to another, and he's been helping me out ever since."

"I've never heard of him," Dexter said. "Does he have a name in the Cantil?"

"Ghost," Mykie said, biting her lip.

Dexter drew in a sharp breath.

"What?" Noah asked, looking back and forth between Mykie and Dexter. "Should we be worried? Is he an alright guy?"

"He's a dangerous one," Dexter murmured. "Not many people have met him face to face."

Noah ran his fingers through his hair as he thought. "It's a little weird then, that you met him face to face the same day there was an attack at the restaurant you went to with Renly."

Mykie narrowed her eyes. "Are you accusing him of betraying the Cantil? Betraying me?"

"I don't know." Noah shrugged. "It just seems a little odd to me. Did he know where you were going that day?"

"No," she snapped. She knew, deep down, that she was overreacting. If this was any other guy they were talking about, she would consider it, but Ryker wasn't capable of doing something like that. "He walked away from the car and Renly came over to ask me to dinner.”

Noah and Dexter looked at each other before they both looked back at Mykie. "Is it possible that the two of them were working together? That they purposely led you to where Chance would be—"

"Dex, no." Mykie let out an exasperated sigh and shook her head. " I’m the one who suggested the restaurant and I didn't even tell Renly where we were going, so there was no one leading me anywhere. Besides, why would Renly and Ryker let their father be killed by the Vultures, if they were one of them? It doesn't make sense."

"Noah's right, though. Something's not adding up about this situation," Dexter stated. “I've never seen you not be suspicious of someone. Are you sure there haven't been any other weird coincidences?"

Mykie thought about it. “The day I got attacked at the mall by the Vulture, I was there with Renly. Then the next time I saw the Vulture was at his dad’s office. Then at a restaurant a few blocks from here, after I left Renly’s house. He’s never shown me that he knew anything was going on, though. And Ryker's a good guy. He's had a lot of opportunities to hurt me in all the times we've been alone, or someone else I care about if he wanted to, but he hasn't. I trust him almost as much as I trust Jezebeth, all right? He won’t do anything to me that I didn’t ask for.”

Dexter gave a small nod. He agreed to drop the subject for now, but Mykie had a feeling they'd revisit it another time when he thought she could think straighter.

"Dex?" Jezebeth voice came from down the hallway along with the squeaky sound of her door opening. Her bare feet slapped on the wooden floor as she came around the corner to the living room. She was dressed differently than she went to her room in. Her makeup had been wiped off her face, and she had changed into a green sleepwear set. Her hair was sticking up in places, but Jezebeth must have ran her fingers through it when she got out of bed, as it wasn't too much of a wreck. "Are you coming back to bed?"

Noah grabbed his jacket off the couch and stomped across the living room. "I got to go."

"Wait, Noah," Dexter said with a sigh.

"It was nice meeting you again," Jezebeth said with a sleepy smile.

Noah grabbed his shoes and yanked them on his feet. He tucked the strings in the side of his shoe instead of taking the time to tie them. He almost fell twice in the process. "I've got to be at the training facility early tomorrow. It has nothing to do with you."

Mykie and Dexter both knew it was a lie. Dexter didn't move to stop him, however, as Noah yanked the door open and ran out.
