Page 56 of When We Feel

I thought this moment would never come. And here it is. I couldn’t be more grateful.

I set my hand on my stomach and train my eyes on the water when I remember.

“You haven’t had your dessert…”

He laughs quietly.

“It will melt,” I say.

My argument is compelling enough to make him push out of bed. He returns a moment later with two dessert spoons instead of one.

“We share,” he says.

I roll to my side and prop myself on my elbow.

He does the same, holding the bowl.

We eat in silence, his eyes evading mine.

“Thank you for sharing this afternoon with me…” I say when we finish eating, and he collects the spoons and empty bowl and sets them on the nightstand. “And thank you for bringing me back.”

“The pleasure is all mine,” he says before propping himself against the pillow.

He closes his eyes, his arm folded under his head again, while his chest moves up and down at a slow pace.

Just looking at him has a soporific effect on me. I pull closer to him.

He doesn’t react when I splay my fingers over his chest.

“This will also be our secret,” I say.

He opens his eyes and tips his gaze to me while I press my lips against his pecs.

“He will know…” I murmur. “The same way he knows everything else. But this can still be our secret.”

A slow smile creases his lips.

“All right… It works for me.”

I retreat when he shifts his position and drapes his arm over my stomach.

I roll to my other side while he spoons me, his body warm against my back, his face buried in my hair.

“Good night, Raven…”

A smile lines his voice.

I grin as well.

“Good night, baby…”

And that is it.

The beautiful afternoon of warmth and languor morphs into a dreamless sleep.

For both of us.
