His clothes look impeccable, as if he just put them on. Although these are the clothes he wore last night.

“We’re getting there, brother, especially if we keep doing this…” he says.

“I don’t know what we’re talking about.”

Just to be safe, I tip my gaze to my drink.

“You know what I’m talking about. She’s hot as hell when she is with all of us. Well, she is no different when she is with any of us individually. Why do you think Kai has spent some time with her?”

He searches my eyes while I lift my eyebrows, a questioning look on my face.

He observes me before laughing and gesturing with the hand holding his drink.

“Right. I forgot you did not know how she was. Or that he had her.”

His mockery is funny.

I laugh. Stupidly, I know. But I can’t help myself.

“Don’t be a dick,” I retort. “Of course, I know he had her. Didn’t I tease the hell out of him? Do you know what else I think? He just couldn’t help himself. He had it in his head that he’d have her for himself at some point, but never expected that it would happen so soon and with real consequences. That clause in the contract was an afterthought. He did it because he wanted to cover his butt. Like you here, he got a little caught in her and didn’t want to give her too much too soon.”

He laughs.

“Fuck off, man… I didn’t get caught in her.”

“Like I didn’t see it.”

“You saw nothing. I was in a fucking bad mood. Why is it such a big deal?”

“You got your dick wet and wanted more.”

“I’ve never made a secret out of that.”

“That’s not how this thing works.”

He shoots me a glance and studies my face. I barely keep myself from smiling.

”What are you saying, motherfucker? Do you think you’re better than me? You are more patient than me and all that? First off, I don’t believe you,” he says, giving me an inquisitive gaze. “I’m not so sure you didn’t find her. And by the way… I told him you went looking for her.”

My smile fades, but I try to keep the nonchalant expression on my face.

“Why?”

“Because it was true. I’m still not sure you didn’t search for her.”

“Why would I look for her?”

He slides back into his seat, holding his drink.

“Why do you think? You’re not fooling anyone,” he says, setting his drink on the coffee table and stretching his legs.

I gesture at him.

“Whatever.”

“Yeah… Whatever. You want the same thing. And I don’t blame you. I want it too.”

“As I said…” I mutter, tense. “That’s not how things work.”
