I collect my drink and walk across the venue.

Alejandro has his back turned to me and his eyes trained on the woman. It just happens that her phone rings, and she tips her eyes to the screen, excuses herself, and slides out of her seat.

The bartender tips off Alejandro when he shifts his gaze to me. Alejandro also notices me in the mirror before pivoting in his seat and lifting an eyebrow at me in surprise.

“Raven?”

Oh, that smile and genuine pleasure flooding his eyes. I needed that. I need it so much I forget about the redhead and quickly close the space between us. I set my drink down and bring my lips to his cheek.

His face is totally flushed when he moves in his seat again and looks at me, a bit in awe––I needed that too––his eyes going down, taking inventory of my attire.

“What happened?” he asks, pushing to his feet.

Reaching inside his pocket, he produces a one hundred-dollar bill. He leaves it on the counter.

I don’t know if he’s in a rush to leave before his companion returns, or he’s just happy to get out of this place. Period.

“Nothing.”

He peers down again, pleasantly surprised, before moving his eyes to my drink.

“Do you need anything else?”

“No,” I say softly.

He brings his eyes back to me, and we share a stare that makes me soft inside. We look at each other for a few long seconds as if we just found one another again.

“Have you had any sleep?” he asks.

He doesn’t look tired, rather excited that I’m here, but I can tell that he hasn’t slept either.

“No. That’s why I’m here. I can’t sleep.”

“I couldn’t sleep either,” he murmurs, his eyes sliding to my dress again.

“I saw you,” I say.

His eyes move up.

“I saw you this morning at the hotel.”

“Really? Where were you?”

“In the lobby. I’d just gotten there.”

He slides his hands into his pockets and moves closer to me, so no one hears our conversation.

A questioning look slides over his face.

“Why did you get there so late?” he murmurs, his eyes glinting with a soft grin.

It’s probably because I’m tired that I suddenly get all emotional. I make an effort to hold myself together.

“I couldn’t go straight to the hotel, so I went to the beach.”

He doesn’t comment.

“After you left…” I murmur. “I didn’t want to stay there any longer. But I didn’t want to go back, so I asked the driver to take me to the beach.”
