Page 16 of When We Feel

“You searched for me as if I was a fugitive.”

“At that point, you were… And it wasn’t only about me or the three of us looking for you. So many things could’ve happened to you.”

I flash a taunting smile.

“What exactly could’ve happened to me?”

He doesn’t bite.

“It’s not what you think.”

“It must be what I think. It’s stated in the contract that I’m supposed to be exclusive with the three of you. You wanted to know if I’d kept my end of the deal.”

“It wasn’t about fucking other men.”

No emotion flickers through his voice.

I’m a little hurt.

I thought that all this was about that. Not only about the men I could’ve met and spent time with. But even about spending time with his friends.

I thought a shred of jealousy had percolated through his brain. Why else would he be here?

I ponder a little longer, my lips pressed into a tight line.

“Why is it so important to you?” I shoot at him. “It was a boring-ass party. You were all caught up in something else. I didn’t want to be there. It wasn’t my scene.”

That was a joke.

He laughs, entertained. I wanted that. And now I’m playing cute to see that man again. I’m such a sucker for his emotions.

I was like that at that dinner party, too. I wanted to get a feel of his mood. To get feedback from him. Receive his attention.

He’s right.

They’re all right.

I liked when he talked to me and shared some insider information with me.

I thought it would help me with my interactions with them. Bullshit. That’s not what I thought about.

I was just happy and wagged my tail because I didn’t feel left out, and I needed validation.

I so need to fix this. I don’t want to get entangled with his feelings again and react the way I have.

“It wasn’t your scene…?” he mutters.

The sarcasm in his voice is thick like fog.

“You know what I mean. The three of you were busy. You seemed to have company. I wanted to have some fun. There was no fun for me there, so I left.”

“How was it?” he tosses at me curtly, piercing me with his gaze.

I lose my cool for a second.

What is he talking about? Is he talking about something other than what I think he’s talking about?

“How was what?”
