And every time my tongue has swirled around their crowns, it has also been reenacted in his imagination.

His lips part into a knowing smile. And I don’t know whether to consider it a minor victory or fear it.

It surely erases the impression left by everything else swirling inside him.

In a way, I’ve given him no choice.

I didn’t want to have a serious conversation with him, although I doubt he would’ve had one with me, anyway.

He is not here to get me. He is here to put out the flames burning through his soul. The fire I’ve never thought I’d see in him.

It doesn’t mean he burns for me.

Maybe it has nothing to do with me, and it’s all about him. His anger, fury, and displeasure may stem from the discomfort created by my actions.

Just because he’s shown me how vulnerable he is doesn’t mean shit.

Zilch. Nada.

But I like it, nonetheless. And I’m not going to lie.

Although I’ll pay dearly for that privilege. Especially now that I thumbed my nose at him.

He’ll make me pay. That’s why he looks at me that way.

Running his gaze over my body, collecting incriminating evidence, plotting ways to make me regret that I have crossed him.

Alejandro was right. So damn right. He knew he’d pay dearly, too. He didn’t mind it, though, despite feeling the brunt of Kai’s fury and having no other choice but to leave the hotel later.

“I talked to you last night…” he says, a bit distracted, lifting his gaze from my dress or legs.

Or hips.

Or maybe it was my chest.

I start to sweat in my dress.

“And?”

I set the bottle down and lean against the wall table.

“You said you’d return to the hotel.”

“And you didn’t believe me.”

His eyes gleam with a little smile.

“Why was it so important for you to believe you?”

“Why?”

“Yes. Why? You just wanted to teach me a lesson. That’s all it was.”

I swallow. Hard. Once. Twice. And then again.

“I didn’t plan to teach you a lesson. It wasn’t about you, anyway. I just wanted to leave.”

“And you did exactly that. You were pissed, and you bluffed. And I had bluffed too. And off you went. You came to the hotel, but it wasn’t good enough for you. Or effective enough. It didn’t put out a strong enough statement, so you went to a club. And then ran away as if you were a fugitive.”
