Me: Hey Marcus, this is Shane. I’m here at the library.

Marcus: I’m in study room b, I thought a private room would be best.

All right, study room b it is. I make my way through the library to the study rooms and when I get closer to b; I slow my pace. Marcus looks out the window and my breath catches in my throat.

Holy. Hell. He’s hot! Dark hair, full beard and he looks built underneath his button down. The only thing that screams nerd on him is his horn-rim glasses.

Smiling back at him, I enter the room. “Hey, I’m Shane.”

He holds his hand out. “Nice to meet you. I’m Marcus. Tony said you needed some help with math.”

“Tony?”

“Professor Grant.”

“Oh, yeah.” I laugh. “Dude, you have your work cut out for you. I suck with numbers.”

“Lucky for you, I don’t.” He winks and my heart races.

“I guess that is lucky for me.”

He takes a seat and gestures to the chair beside him. “Let’s see what you’re working on, and we can go from there.”

He smells like soap and apples. It’s a refreshing change of pace from some of the strong deodorants and body sprays I deal with around the locker room. I let myself inhale his scent before pulling my book and notebook out.

He checks out my textbook, flipping through the pages, and then looks over my notes. His eyebrows are moving around and he’s making little “hm” sounds as he works, and I do my best to not look like I’m checking him out.

“Okay, Shane, let’s start with some review on basics and then we can see where you’re disconnecting with math.”

Nodding, I sit forward and watch as he scribbles out numbers and explains everything slowly. He makes it easy to pay attention and understand what I need to do. Before I know it, the alarm goes off on my phone, letting me know it’s time to train.

“Damn.” I shut the alarm off. “I need to get to the gym.”

“That’s right, you’re a boxer.”

“You’ve seen me in the ring?”

“No. I don’t usually go to sporting events.”

“Oh.” Pressing my lips together, I gather my things.

“I don’t mean to offend, it’s just I don’t know much about them.”

“I could teach you.” I lift a shoulder in a shrug.

“Never really wanted to learn.” He smiles. “Until now. When do you want to meet next to continue?”

“Are you free tomorrow morning?”

“I am. Wanna meet back here?”

“Sounds good to me.” I lift my hand in an awkward wave and step out of the room.

Way to be a dork, Shane.

Marcus

“Wow!”
