“We always knew that when you found that special person that it would happen quick. You’re a lot like your father, a planner. When you want something bad enough, you pursue it with everything you have.”

Huh. That was true. I hadn’t looked it at like that. Turning away from Lexi, I walk to the far window so she doesn’t hear everything I’m about to say.

“I’m crazy about her. But she’s fighting me. Trying to push me away because she thinks she’s ordinary,” I change my voice so she knows I think that’s ridiculous. “She’s anything but that.”

“Oh honey,” she sighs. “I can’t wait to meet her. You keep showing her how special she is. She’ll come around.”

“I will. There’s no way I’m letting her go.”

Mom hiccups over the line, making me grin at her theatrics. “Okay honey, I just wanted to call and see how you were. Get back to your girl. And think about bringing her to dinner next time you come up.”

“I’ll see what I can do. Love you mom.”

“Love you too.”

Shaking my head, I let my hand drop and turn back to Lexi. I’m shocked to see she’s sitting on the sofa a couple feet from me. There’s a look on her face I can’t interpret. Her feet are resting against the side of the coffee table, her hand is fully wedged in a tube of Pringles. She looks calm and relaxed, but I have a feeling shit’s about to hit the fan.

“Did I just hear you correctly? Did you really just tell your mom about me?”

“Yes,” I agree. I’m not going to hide anything or lie to her.

“Are you out of your mind? Why would you do that? We’re just…I don’t know, but you can’t just go and tell your mom about your newest sexual partner.”

I don’t like the tone she’s using or the way she’s putting herself down. Going to her, I pull the Pringles can out of her hands and place it on the table. She makes a noise of protest, but I quiet her with a look. “First, we’re in a relationship. From the moment you let me hold your hand in the elevator, you were mine. And when you agreed to a date yesterday, we became an official thing.”

“Wait. What?”

I don’t let her continue. Needing to get these words out so that we’re on the same page. “Iwantto be with you Pixie. I’m in this, I’m fully in this with you. Forget about my status. Forget about what I do for a living. Stop making excuses for why this won’t work. Because it will. I’m just a man. One who’s absolutely crazy for you.”

She looks like she’s about to be sick. That’s a hit to the ego. Pushing myself further onto the couch, I lift her onto my lap. Her head rests on my shoulder once I settle her.

“What are you thinking?” I ask when she’s been quiet for too long.

Letting out a long breath of air with a low groan, she answers, “I’m absolutely dreading telling my sister about us.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because she is totally going to throw an ‘I told you so’ in my face. She’s going to be a brat about it for weeks. Months probably. Urg!”

Laughing at how put out she sounds, I hug her tight. “I’m sure she won’t be that bad.”

Lexi makes a rude sound. “She’s the worst.”

“No, she’s not.”

“Fine, she’s not. But she is a little know-it-all.”

“Gee, I wonder who she gets that from.”

“Hey,” she elbows me in the stomach. “I don’t act like that.”

“You tried to convince me you knew what was best for us and we couldn’t be together.”

Lexi whistles her amazement. “Wow. Looks like I don’t have to go far for that ‘told you so’.”

Titling her head up to me, I give her a kiss. “You know what I mean. I’m exactly where I want to be.”

Her eyes dart back and forth between mine, seeing the truth. There’s still something she’s holding back from me, I can feel it in the tension of her shoulders, but I can be patient. I know in time she’ll open up to me and share what is making her uneasy. Until then, I’ll keep showing her how much she means to me.
