Senator Johnson stood by his massive fireplace, entertaining a crowd. I’d Googled him before the party, so I knew what he looked like. He was in sixties and his wife was probably around my age, but it was difficult to say because she had thick layers of make up on.

I approached the group, hoping to speak to Kate, his wife. At that moment, Sparky and Milo arrived. Milo with his wife and Sparky with a blonde bombshell I’d never seen before.

“Hello, I’m Jessica. I saw you that you came in with Sebastian Dimitrei?” a woman asked.

I’d never seen her before.

“Yes, I’m his wife, Marinka Dimitrei,” I replied. It was still strange introducing myself like that. Her face brightened up instantly.

“Oh, I remember you, he brought you to the club in the city many years ago and you looked so scared then. I worked there as a hostess. Vinny,” she said, and then shouted at someone in the crowd, who joined her momentarily. “This is Marinka. Sebastian’s Dimitrei wife.”

Vinny was short but broad-shouldered. He definitely didn’t look American.

“Well, well, well … who do we have here?” he said as though he recognising me. I had no idea who he was, and at this point, I didn’t really care. I was angry because the senator and his wife had suddenly vanished somewhere and I wanted to talk to them. “Last time we met, you left me feeling pretty disappointed.”

I had strange vibes from this guy. He was looking at me with lust in his eyes, but since I didn’t remember anything from my time with Sebastian four years ago, I was drawing a blank.

“I’m sorry but I don’t know if you have been following the latest news. I was in a coma, so I have no idea who you are,” I told him, keeping my voice even and confident. “And I don’t really care, so if you excuse me…”

“Not so fast, kitten. Where is the rush?” he said, grabbing my wrist. This was a bad move, but I remained calm. I could put bullet between his eyes. All I needed was a gun. “You were dancing for me, you said it was salsa when I was expecting something more erotic. I knew then that something wasn’t right.”

“I suggest you take your filthy hands off me before I cut them off with the steak knife,” I said sweetly, giving him a stinky eye. He pulled away from me then, raising his hands as if in surrender, but he seemed amused by my reaction. This guy was asking for trouble.

“All right. Cool it, baby,” he muttered.

“Tell me again how we know each other?” I asked, looking around and wondering where Sofia was and if she was going to show her face at all.

“You were supposed to give me a lap dance, but you were awkward and shy. Sebastian introduced us four years ago in his club,” he explained.

“Interesting,” I muttered, trying to remember that moment. I knew before I went to that vacation with my parents, I had no confidence and I was clumsy, so if Sebastian truly forced me to entertain this man, no wonder I failed. “It was great to catch up with you, but I am searching for someone. Maybe you have seen Sofia Anishenko around here?”

His face changed instantly and I was certain that he turned a little pale.

“She’s here, but I would stay away from her. That woman doesn’t have a heart,” he stated, then took a generous sip of his drink. He looked like he knew something about that bitch and it seemed the universe put him in my path again. I just didn’t believe in strong coincidences.

“She’s a problem and I intend to take care of my problems,” I replied.

Sebastian was with his brothers and only then did I notice he was watching me. His dark eyes were focused on Vinny, and he didn’t look happy.

Vinny took another sip and then glanced around as though he wanted to make sure no one was listening to us.

“You didn’t hear it from me, but apparently, she’s a snitch for the feds. In exchange, they let her do as she pleases, so I stay away from her because she goes after everyone you care about. That woman will always get what she wants.”

CHAPTER29

Sebastian

“Get awayfrom me and stop manhandling me in public like that!” a high-pitched female voice shouted.

I turned my attention away from my wife and looked at Sparky’s new date. A few other people were staring, too. It seemed she wasn’t too happy with the fact that he was being overprotective. Sparky had mentioned that she was some sort of supermodel.

“You’re here with me and you’re flirting with these old twats,” he barked at her.

The pair started arguing right after he introduced me to her. Now, the woman was making a scene.

Marinka was standing in the distance with a guy I recognized from somewhere, but I couldn’t remember where. His face was familiar and I felt uneasy.

“I can flirt with whoever I want and I only agreed to go out with you because you promised to introduced me to the senator, so get your hands off me,” she snapped.
