CHAPTER28

Marinka

Tonight,we were attending senator Johnson’s party. I was nervous, even though I felt emboldened in my beautiful golden evening gown and matching heels. I could hardly walk in them, but at least I felt more elegant than ever.

Ed had informed me that my father hadn’t left any files for me. This was disappointing. My last resort was reaching out to Sofia’s bodyguard. Michelle, the sales assistant from the store, had hinted that apparently, he wasn’t too happy with his job as he hated his boss. No kidding.

I managed to find out that two of his brothers were also working for her and that was why he was reluctant to make a move. People in her organization couldn’t just leave. They were rolled out in coffins or had their bodies chopped to pieces.

I wanted to be the person to bring Sofia down. Sebastian couldn’t get out of protective mode when it came to me. He thought I was fragile, so it had taken him a while for him to even let me go to his meetings. I couldn’t get him involved—this was my task to see through.

Sparky was opening a new club on the east side of the city, so we were spending a lot of time there, helping him out with renovations. Ever since he found out I wasn’t Russina, he stopped being forward with me, treating me with respect. He didn’t mention what had happened in the past, but from his at times bashful behavior, I could tell he was embarrassed. Sparky’s mistake would go with me to the grave because he didn’t know who I was.

Sebastian walked into the bedroom when I was getting ready and when he saw me, he stopped in his tracks. He looked really good in a black tuxedo.

“Wow, maybe we should stay home. Not sure I want people to see you in that dress,” he said, walking up to me and hugging me from behind. His dark eyes scanned me through the mirror.

I had to admit I’d gotten used to life without the memories. Sebastian was a grumpy mafia king, but he was adventurous in bed and with him, my life was never going to be dull.

“And why is that?” I asked, laughing because I already knew what he was going to say.

“Every old fucker at the party will stare at you and I don’t think I would be able to stop myself from ripping their eyes from their sockets. I told you this body is for my eyes only,” he said.

“Well, if you want me to behave, you just have to trust me, baby. So, no emotional outbursts or threatening people with guns at that party,” I said, and he growled like a beast before kissing my neck. “I mean it, Sebastian.”

“Fine, let’s go before I change my mind,” he muttered. I knew he really wanted to kiss my lips, but I’d spent an hour in front of the vanity to look like this and I didn’t want to ruin my makeup.

Lilly was staying at Penelope’s place tonight. She’d been looking forward to it all day. Penelope had a little boy herself and since Tasha already had plans, we thought it was a good idea for her to have a play date in Penelope’s apartment.

Senator’s Johnson’s house was one of the finest in the city. The press was in attendance, mingling with notable local figures and Hollywood stars. I was out of my comfort zone, because I wasn’t used to people staring at me and trying to get me to talk about myself.

My mother sent me an email stating that she was going to contest the will, but Sebastian’s lawyer assured me I’d be okay. My farther had gone through an attorney to draft the will and it had been duly registered. My mother was furious, but she didn’t deserve a penny.

Sooner or later, she’d get married again, probably to some wealthy man so he would keep paying for her lavish lifestyle. Either way, she was not my problem.

We mingled with the crème de la crème of Chicago, with me wishing I was anywhere but here. The waitress handed us a drink and people stopped us to talk. Apparently, the news that Russina had died years ago had spread fast. People in his line of business knew that I replaced her and I recently woke up from the coma. This created some problems with our distribution, but since we took over my father’s business, Sebastian was hopeful that things would get back to normal soon. My father had built many strong connections over the years and my marriage tied two families together.

If we could avoid the conflict with the Russians, everything would be fine. I had to find a way to get rid of Sofia.

“I think we should mingle, but I don’t want you to leave my side. You’re an asset now and many people want to meet you. The word in my line of business travels fast,” Sebastian said.

My father had been a private person and now I was in the spotlight, so people were naturally curious.

“I can take care of myself, Sebastian. It would be good for us if I network,” I said. The mansion was huge, filled with the most stunning antiques, paintings, and furniture from top designers. I felt like I was in a palace. “Let me find the senator’s wife. Roxanna said we have a lot in common, so maybe she can reveal some of the senator’s plans.”

“I don’t know, princess,” he said, looking around. He was afraid of Gino and his men. The old Italian knew that I was alive and he wasn’t pleased. And Sofia was somewhere here, too.

I placed my hand on his chest.

“It’s a crowded party. No one is going to kill anyone here. There is security everywhere. Besides, I’m an adult, you know. I can take care of myself,” I said, and he narrowed his eyes at me. “Go and do your thing, Sebastian. I will be fine.”

“You’re playing a very dangerous game with me, wife,” he said, holding my wrist. We were surrounded by crowds of people, but no one was paying any attention to us.

“I will make it up to you later. Just trust me with this,” I said, leaned over and quickly adding, “Meet me later by that fountain in the garden.”

I knew he wanted to argue and if I let him, he would probably chain me to him, but I promised myself that I would avenge my father. There were people here who could possibly help out. Ed had managed to find some information about her, but nothing concrete.

Sebastian exhaled and finally let go of me. I placed my glass of champagne on the tray and took a fresh one, along with some canapés that looked delicious. He was still watching me when I meandered through the main room.
