“Her name is Sofia and she took over from the man I worked with, who was executed a few months ago,” I explained.

“So, what happened? Is she not honoring your deal?”

“No … she’s power-hungry, and she’s always wanted Marcus’ job.”

“You think she killed him to take his place?” she asked. Marinka was a quick study.

“Most likely, but it’s just the way this has been done that left a bad taste on my mouth. Everything changed … but we shouldn’t be talking about this here,” I said, thinking about the pictures I received through the mail, just like Marcus’ family. The man’s body was cut to pieces and I just couldn’t understand why go so far as to do such a thing if one didn’t want to stir the pot?

We talked a little more about a safer subject, mostly Lilly.

“All right, let me go powder my nose.” She smiled.

I followed her trek to the restroom, not missing how men were checking her out. This time around, I felt smug like the Cheshire Cat. Like I was on top of the world.

I sipped on my champagne while I waited, and then, out of nowhere, someone sat in Marinka’s chair. I nearly choked on that fucking drink when Sofia stared down her nose at me, beaming as though she’d won the entire north-west mob territory of the United States.

“What the fuck is this? You have five seconds to get up and leave or I swear to God I—”

“Relax, Sebastian. We both know you won’t touch me in front of all these people in this fancy restaurant because you want to appear sophisticated, a man with a good reputation, right? Especially in front of your precious little wife…”

CHAPTER18

Marinka

I wentto the spa-like restroom and after relieving myself and washing my hands, I stared at my reflection in the mirror for a little while. This evening was so unexpected and I couldn’t stop the joy that kept brimming to the surface. Why should I? Things were improving and I was getting to know my husband. I wouldn’t stop thinking about him—he was the master of my thoughts.

This dress looked like a million bucks and filled me with confidence. I felt like the queen he told me I was—and it was all thanks to him.

I couldn’t wait to try the food, but mostly, I was craving my husband like the Devil. He made me feel things I couldn’t understand at times, but already, I couldn’t imagine my life without him. And tonight, he looked good to eat in a perfectly tailored black Armani suit and crisp white shirt, the top two buttons left enticingly open.

I didn’t know when this happened, but the emotions snuck on me when I wasn’t looking. Sebastian was part of my world with Lilly, and I couldn’t separate the two.

I was … falling in love with him. Hopelessly. Inexplicably.

I pinched my cheeks but they were already rosy. Then, I smoothed out my hair, which flowed down my back in a silky straight style parted on one side.

Sebastian wasn’t the kind of man I imagined myself being with, but despite his faults, he was kind and looked after me. What else could I want?

His sexual tastes did terrify me a little. I found myself looking a few things up during the day when I was alone. The world of kinky sex was as varied as the Earth was big. Some of that stuff was really sick and twisted, but so far, Sebastian didn’t seem that extreme. I liked it when he praised me and called me a good girl, and the idea of being sexually submissive didn’t repel me. On the contrary…

I just needed guidance, and Sebastian was ready to give it. I was sick of sleeping alone.

With a little wave to my reflection, I hurried back to my beloved, filled with enthusiasm like a besotted teen.

My beloved Sebastian…

I was just thinking how hungry I was when I stopped in my tracks at the sight of a woman sitting in my seat. My heart stopped along with my legs when I realized she was holding Sebastian’s hand. I had never seen her before or if I had, I didn’t remember her.

Sebastian looked uncomfortable the whole time. Stunning and tall, she wore a short red dress revealing tanned legs and feet encased in cream leather stilettos. She was curvy in all the right places and when she smiled, she showed a set of porcelain-white teeth in an immaculately made-up face.

When I regained my ability to move, I walked slowly to the table.

“Sebastian,” I said, cleaning my throat and letting them know I was back.

He quickly pulled his hand away from her grip and she turned a bored green gaze at me. She looked me up and down, her attitude turning more condescending by the second.

“Marinka, I do apologize. This is Sofia, my Russian business partner, and she was just leaving,” he said, standing up and clearly expecting her to do the same.
