Two pirates went to the aid of their comrade.

Another one came for me. My foot shot out and cracked him in the shoulder. The pirate stumbled back and fell onto his behind.

“Bitch,” he said, scrambling across the sand with his dagger raised. He grabbed the back of my neck and ran the filthy tip of the knife along my cheek. Hadn’t he learned from his friend’s mistake?

My entire body vibrated from the drumming of my heartbeat. I closed my eyes, praying to the sea king for mercy.

Three tritons aimed at the pirate’s throat.

“Knock her out,” growled Faraall, “and she’ll be less trouble for you.”

My eyes snapped open. What did that mean?

A pirate pulled out a long flute from where he’d had it tucked into his sash. He put his thin lips to it and blew. Something shot out of the end of the device. The sharp dart jabbed me in the neck. Hot fluid coursed through my veins.

“What was that?” I demanded.

Faraall leaned down beside me and grabbed the sides of my head. “Goodbye for now, sweet princess. I look forward to our wedding night. To fucking you every night until your sweet seal pearl is bruised and sore.”

I wanted to sayShellfish off, you creep, but my vision blurred. Dizziness hit me, and I moaned, leaning my head against the tree. His spinning figure crouched beside me. Nausea struck, and I retched, but nothing came up.

“Let go of me,” I moaned, swaying to one side and sagging against the tree.

“Shhh, Princess, don’t fight it,” whispered the commander, stroking my hair. “Soon, we will reunite. Then I will be your new master.”

My insides rolled at his disgusting words and plans. “When my father finds, out he’ll…” My throat was so dry, I could barely get a word out.

That was all I remembered before I passed out.
