CHAPTER 45

Cheyenne

ONE MONTH LATER

Alight knock came on the bathroom door and Isabella happily reported, “It’s time to get you in your dress.”

“Just a minute,” I answered as I stared down at the stick in my hand. The stick that had two lines. The stick telling me I was pregnant.

I’d grabbed a test at the Piggly Wiggly a couple of weeks ago because I’d been exhausted and nauseous. But when I got home that day, I got a call from Marissa saying that she’d come down with a bug and asked if we could take Amelia, so we’d dropped everything and driven to Savannah.

That was the last time I’d thought about the test that had been in my purse since I’d bought it. Until I woke up this morning, the morning of my wedding, and spent the past three hours in the bathroom feeling like I was going to be sick. Thankfully, I hadn’t actually thrown up, but when I was looking for peppermint breath mints to settle my stomach I saw the test and took it.

And it was positive.

So, I’d snuck out, driven to the Walmart twenty minutes away so no one would recognize me, and bought five more tests. I stared down at all the pregnancy tests lined up. They were all positive.

I grabbed my phone from my purse to see when I’d had my last period. I pulled up the calendar and saw that it had been over two months ago.

Things had been so crazy I hadn’t even noticed that I’d missed it. Cash and I moving in together. Me driving up to Charlotte every chance I got to spend time with my dad. Marissa and Lia moving to Savannah. The wedding. It had been a lot.

There was another knock on the door. “Hey, sweetie, it’s Colleen. Are you okay in there?”

“Yeah, I just need a minute.”

Over the past few months, I’d felt like I hadn’t just gained a dad I’d also gained a mom. Colleen had welcomed me with open arms. We texted on a daily basis and we spoke at least once a week. She’d told me more about my mom, and I could honestly say that I felt like I’d finally gotten to know who my mother was. And knowing her had somehow allowed me to know myself better.

I might be the spitting image of the woman who blessed me with life, but I was my own person. And now, that person was going to be a mom.

I needed to tell Cash. I had to tell him that he was going to be a dad. Again.

It was our wedding day. Should I wait until after the ceremony? Should I call him in before? Was that bad luck to see the groom before the ceremony?

The alarm dinged on my phone telling me that it was the ten-minute mark. Ten minutes until I was set to marry the man I loved, the father of my child.

I placed my hand on my belly and stared in the mirror.

How was it possible that all my dreams were coming true in one day?

I grabbed the sticks and wrapped them up, rolling toilet paper around them and placed the bundle back in my purse. My mind was racing with how I was going to tell Cash. I knew that he was going to be over-the-moon.

Should I tell him today? Tonight? Wait until tomorrow?

I still didn’t know the answer when I walked out and saw a room filled with worried faces. My sisters-in-law, soon-to-be mother-in-law and Marissa were all staring at me with concern. I smiled widely, hoping to throw them off the scent of my morning sickness.

“I shouldn’t have had that Chinese food last night.”

It was really important to me that no one knew before I told Cash. Not only because he was the father, obviously, but also because he was my best friend. And I was going to get to marry him.

“You girls look so cute!” I exclaimed when I saw Luna and Lia in their matching flower girl dresses.

Luna looked up at Marissa who was holding Lia. “Don’t worry, I already threw flowers with Sherlock. He ate them and got sick, but I’ll make sure Lia doesn’t.”

“Sherlock is a dog,” Isabella quickly explained.

Marissa chuckled.

“You ready to get in your dress?” Reagan asked, keeping everyone on schedule.
