She took a deep breath and then sighed. “It was Zaya. she said she refused to get in trouble for accepting poor suggestions. We had vetted the specialists that would compete to be the first to make suggestions about the animals for the park. My personal belief is that she liked her own suggestion of just let them run wild and breed. That's what they're doing now and that's why they are on the endangered animal list. She seems to have made-up her mind and she refuses to change it regardless of how many people disagree with her. As Toni said, someone at least needs to be consulted so we have some options.”

“Maybe if she is dead set in her feelings about specialists, she should be put in another group dealing with something else like fencing.” Toni suggested.

“Why don't we do that.” Ranger agreed.

Joni looked relieved. “Thank you.”

“You won't need to tell her, I will have somebody go to inform her.” Ranger advised.

“Perhaps you could show us the suggestions you had since everyone else managed to agree and we can move on while we're waiting for the groups to be switched around?”

Joni began to pull out the papers and handed her copies of them. They discussed the different specialists that they had interviewed, and Toni would agree that the person they had selected seemed extremely qualified to do the work that they needed done. They had interviewed at least a dozen specialists and that was after they had researched to come up with the list. She would bet that's the only contribution Zaya had made was to disapprove of everything they did.

Ranger had made a phone call to get people switched around in the groups. Now he was back, and he wondered what they'd been discussing.

“Joni showed me the list they had compiled of possible specialists to fill the position. I thought they did a good job and I agree with their choice. My thought was that maybe you would look at it and see if you do too so we wouldn't lose time over this.”

He looked over the list thoroughly and it was hard to tell what he thought until he spoke. “This looks like a good list, and it seems to have all the top specialists in this area on it. You spoke to everyone on this list?”

“Yes, and a couple of them said they would not relocate so we marked them off the list. If you look at the list, you can see that we put a light line through them. You can also see there's a note at the bottom of the list and every one of them said that the animals needed to be checked out to ensure that they are healthy, and they needed to be paired up carefully for the best possibilities. The one that we selected seemed to feel the most strongly about getting a project like this going and working with it.”

“So, he got points from enthusiasm?” Ranger asked.

“Yes, because I felt he would work harder since he had so much enthusiasm for this project and seemed to know so much about it.”

“I think you're right. You need to go ahead and get him here so that he can look things over and make a final decision on whether he wants to take the project or not, and at that point Carler needs to be brought in to negotiate his pay and benefits package and set-up a contract to determine how long he will stay. My preference is that he just continue with the project as long as the park systems are running but I doubt that he will be willing to commit to what is basically a permanent position.” Ranger admitted.

“We'll get on this right away.” Joni assured.

“Wait a moment.” Ranger directed as she started to leave. He looked at his phone and then looked up. “Zaya has been reassigned and should be with her new group now.”

“Thank you.” she said then she hurried out to get back with her group.

“I know that Zaya is not very nice to the females in any group. Maybe we need to think about someplace else that she can be used where she is not in a group.”

“Are you sure that it is a good idea to keep her at all.” Toni asked.

“She has been among us here and we would not want her spreading rumors or giving out trade secrets if she had to leave.”

“You are aware that eventually you will have an issue with an employee that you cannot overcome any other way?”

“By then I hope someone has come up with a solution so that we will not feel as concerned as we do now.” Ranger explained.

“Sometimes there is no perfect solution.”

“What about us? Do you see any solution for what's between us?”

They had stood to go back to his office and once he spoke, she turned to look at him.

She could swear there was fire in his eyes and her pulse picked up. Did he mean what it sounded like, did he want her? That would surprise her. “I'm not sure what you mean. I have not seen that type of interest in you and thought we were simply friends.”

“Is that all you wish to be?” Ranger asked.

“We could try to be more if we proceeded slowly. I would have to change the way that I have considered our relationship to be developing.”

“Why don't we have a date tonight? Then we can begin to see if anything will develop between us?”

Toni nodded and he pulled her into his arms and gave her a light gentle kiss. She wasn't sure what had changed his mind, but she had always found him extremely attractive. Now it was time to get back to work and so they did. When she had been in high school, she had done office jobs. Organizational skills were something she had always been good at. She had never had an issue at making decisions or implementing plans. Those were things she had always worked at since she thought that if she had a doctor's office later those were skills that would be needed.
