“I appreciate you seeing to him.”

She felt relieved because David was her only relative and he had given her a hard time but now things were finally working out for both of them to have him taken from her would crush her. While Ranger had not been honest with her and hidden the danger she should have known about, he had protected them. She needed to be happy with that because he had not been the one that had started this danger, but he might be the one that ended it.

“Why don't you let me take you to lunch and I'll send someone here to watch David?”

“If I go, will you share with me everything that is going on?” Toni asked.

“If you are sure you want to know.”

“I do want to know so why don't you call someone and we can begin this discussion while we wait for them to come.”

“Alright.” Ranger made the call, and someone was on their way. “What do you want to know?”

“Start when you began suspecting that those mob guys from Vegas had made it here.”

“Your suspicions regarding Zaya made me hire a detective to keep an eye on her and start tracking her history. It didn't take him long to connect her to Joe senior. She was not only his girlfriend, but she was also trying to work her way into the organization in a well-paid position so she could have everything she could possibly want.” Ranger described.

“From what I've heard mob girlfriends usually get paid very good and take few risks.”

“Few risks? What kind of risk would be involved with hanging out with a man?”

“Just imagine going out to a restaurant with a mob boss and having someone come by and shoot through the windows with a machine gun. They don't care who they hit as long as they get the person they're after. Another option is poison maybe in the wine that you're sharing? much of the protection they have is his bodyguards. There is little they can do about a drive-by and they wouldn't know if something was poisoned if it's brought from the kitchen already that way. Another possibility is a bomb. Those are used often and sometimes can take out a whole city block.” Toni explained.

“They truly value life so little?”

“They only value their own lives and that of people that are close to them. That is something most mob bosses have in common. Another thing is that if they feel like you've gotten the best of them, they won't quit unless they're forced to. That is usually by death or someone of a higher level saying stop and actually caring if they do or not. This particular guy that we're dealing with, he's one of the absolute worst.”

“All of this information is available to anyone that looks?” Ranger asked.

“In court they require proven evidence. That gives them many ways to get out of being convicted of something. Sometimes those things that are listed online cannot be used to prove the guilt of someone. But yes, that kind of information and even some speculation is available that anyone can access. Most criminals are well known.”

“That is interesting.”

“I'm sure that is where your detective gets at least a little bit of his information. You have to have a starting place like an address, a phone number or something that you can use to track down more information.” Toni observed.

“You seem to know a lot about this.”

“I am not an expert, but I did work on a computer a lot and one of the things they told us is that at some point we would probably have to look up patients and research drugs so that we would know how to handle each person in a way that would treat them the best as an individual.”

“I thought most doctors hired someone to do this for them?” Ranger asked.

“Maybe once they've been in business a while. Many young doctors starting out are still paying for their college expenses and some have started a family that they have to support.”

“I forget sometimes how hard your society makes it for people to get a good education.”

“It's true and that is unlikely to change anytime soon at least anyplace but here.” Toni observed.

“I am sorry, that you had to give up trying to be a doctor. Another place and another time and I am sure you could have.”

They had finally made it to one of the restaurants that Ranger favored. After they sat down a waitress hurried over. “May I take your drink order?”

Toni ordered a sweet wine hoping that maybe it would calm her down a little bit. Ranger ordered a whiskey sour, apparently, he wanted something with a kick. She hurried away to get their drinks.

“I know there is more so get back to your story.” Toni suggested.

“There's not much more than that. He sent a young male to try to cheat the casino which would have caused a little problem. We suspect he may send more to infiltrate various areas. It helped that we were able to catch Zaya because she was trying to ruin every project we had. We sent her somewhere she will not be able to bother anyone. I'm sure you saw me getting into the elevator with Agent Anderson. She is in our country, so she was subject to our laws and the US does not care if they get her back ever.”

“Agent Anderson, that sounds familiar. Is she the one that was brought in to take down Joe’s son?”
